First Lady emerges as Bush's secret weapon

By Philip Sherwell in Washington and Harry de Quetteville
(Filed: 22/05/2005)

From the lowest point on earth, Laura Bush has embarked on a one-woman mission to raise America's standing in the eyes of the world.

In a sparkling new convention centre next to the Dead Sea in Jordan, more than 1,300ft below sea level, the First Lady took centre stage as a goodwill ambassador for the President and her country.

Her official speech to the World Economic Forum was about women's rights and the importance of democracy in the Middle East, but the underlying message came through loud and clear.

With her husband's approval ratings in a trough at home and her country's reputation further sullied abroad, Mrs Bush - once seen as a shy librarian - is emerging as a powerful player with a brief to buff up America's image in the Islamic world. Her foray into sensitive Middle East terrain is not without its hazards. Although she was not greeted by anti-American protests over the leaked photographs of Saddam Hussein in US custody, Mrs Bush did fly into a diplomatic spat over her official itinerary.

FROM the lowest lifeform on earth.........WHAT the hell is an unelected dimwit like Pickles doing - trying to spread democracy like a hooker spreading VD?

They are gonna run this woman for something I believe. She appears to have taken elocution lessons from Rice, having the same head movements (side to side) and using the same words and phrasing. Billed as America's newest diplomat -- she's on her way folks!

8. No matter what she does, it will not work
They can send her out for all their PR work, but it will be ineffectual to covering up her husband's follies, flaws, lack of diplomacy, war crimes, and all around stupidity. People are not stupid. She is a total fake, and people see right through that.

10. Well that was nauseating
Critics who had caricatured her as a Stepford Wife were surprised by her independent voice. "She's actually turning into one of the more interesting first ladies of recent times," said Barbara Kellerman, a research director of the Center for Public Leadership at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government.

"This shy, retiring librarian is growing into a woman of considerable style and increasing substance. She is changing before our eyes."

----
Telling a creepy joke about a horse makes her a woman of considerable style?

Working for, what, 3 years, makes you a professional working woman? A librarian, no less, whose husband cuts funding to libraries and allows goons to spy on your reading habits?

15. And the people say "Stuff your sedated secret weapon, Boosh!"

Emilo Morenatti/Associated Press
Israeli police and security guards surrounded Laura Bush
today during her visit to two of Jerusalem's most sacred sites,
the Western Wall and the Dome of the Rock.

Jim Hollander/European Pressphoto Agency
Laura Bush leaving after encountering protesters
at the Western Wall.

Mrs. Bush had taken steps to account for religious sensitivities at the sites, including donning a headscarf and taking off her shoes when she entered a mosque. According to television and print reporters, as she approached the Western Wall dozens of protesters shouted "Free Pollard now," a reference to Jonathan Pollard, who is serving a life sentence in an American prison for spying for Israel.

Mrs. Bush was mobbed by protesters and local reporters, and Secret Service agents and guards had to physically hold back the crowd, The Associated Press reported.

The A.P. reported that when she went to the Dome of the Rock, a mosque on a hilltop compound known to Muslims as Haram al Sharif and to Jews as Temple Mount, her presence and that of her entourage inside the shrine apparently upset a group of women praying, and outside the mosque, there were hecklers. One yelled, "How dare you come in here?" and "Why do you hassle our Muslims?" The A.P. said.

what a boring little plank of wood she is - and that voice! It now drives me as nuts as her evil monkey's - she sounds like a near-comatose 90 year old woman, aged beyond her years, a pained & strained voice croaking and wheezing out pathetic Hughesian pablum.

Boy George doesn't have the stones to go on trips where he can't have a pre-screened adoring audience, so he sends Laura, who may be slightly less despised, or so he seems to think.

36. Haven't figured it out,
Irregardless of Bush milking a male horse, and could be a lil reference as to why "Jeff Gannon" was there more often at the White House, but I digress.... I have had this figured out for the longest. They are putting her up front and center these past several weeks and it all boils down to one thing. To make her more popular than Hillary Clinton.... Hillary has beaten her in the Gallup Polls the past several years, whether Hillary was voted the most popular woman or was in the top 5, but always more popular than Laura Bush.... Wait and see folks when the poll comes out, Laura Bush will be the most popular woman in America.... and as I said in recent posts in dealing with the Bush folks, John mason said it best in the movie, "The Rock", "personally, I think you're a fucking idiot"
