Marines sure they were friendly-fire victims
Marines sure they were friendly-fire victims

JACKSONVILLE, North Carolina
(CNN) -- It was the deadliest
day of the Iraq war.

Eighteen Marines were killed in
Nasiriya on March 23 as U.S. and
coalition forces drove to Baghdad.

Six months later, those who fought
alongside them told CNN they remain
bitter that an undetermined number of
their friends were killed -- not by Iraqis --
but by an Air Force A-10 they hoped was
coming to their rescue.

<snip>

Marines said they are certain it was a
U.S. warplane -- the Iraqis did not fly a
single combat mission during the war.

9. "MOVE MOVE MOVE..." Rummy ordered
and they did. Now, the question is: "Did they move too fast?".... indications are that they did. But Rummy wanted results...fast. :-(

. . . at your response saigon68. I don't think nearly enough time has passed yet to make a call like that

7. Doesn't matter where they were...they carry enough in the way...
...of visual indentification that the A-10 pilot should have been able to make the decision not to fire.

What in the heck is the matter with you? Do you think they went to the wrong place on purpose? Is that what you would have told their parents and loved ones?

As a former serviceman, I'm pretty embarrassed by your remarks.

8. Yes the British servicemen also had identification
in both Iraq conflicts but that didn't seem to do a lot of good and the pilots get away with it every time.

BTW am ex forces, 2 tours

4. This is the part of the Jessica Lynch story
that the DOD would rather we didn't know about. The story about what really happened in Nasiriyah and the Lynch rescue?

This 'friendly fire' inncident was an attack on US troops who were trying to rescue Lynch and the other POW's right after they got captured. The second 'stage-for-hollywood' rescue was part of covering up, what a massive FUBAR the battle of Nasiriyah had turned into and how poorly US Forces performed in the only real battle of the Iraq invasion.

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/story/72054p-66800c.html

A daring American raid behind enemy lines rescued Army POW Jessica Lynch from the clutches of her Iraqi captors - giving a huge morale boost for the war effort and a glorious day of thanksgiving for her desperate family. But joy was tempered by reports that Pfc. Lynch was found wounded, along with the bodies of two other American soldiers.

<snip>

A previous rescue attempt went badly. A team of Marines who tried to rescue the missing soldiers on the day of the ambush managed to bring back several wounded men, but nine Marines were killed and eight went missing.

Nine Marines were killed in an Iraqi ambush March 23 near the city of An Nasiriyah in southeastern Iraq. Military officials in Qatar said the Camp Lejeune, N.C.-based Marines were riding in an armored vehicle when it was struck by a rocket-propelled grenade. Officials said the Marines were attacked after Iraqi forces pretended to surrender.

Other Marines repelled the attack, in which 40 Marines were wounded.

Friendly Fire May Have Killed Lejeune Marines

Nine N.C.-based Marines killed Sunday in the battle for Nasiriyah may have been victims of friendly fire, not Iraqis pretending to surrender as originally believed.

5. The Times did an excellent expose on Charlie Company
Wouldn't be surprised if it wins a Pulitzer (maybe it
already did...)

No one's saying who the pilot of that rogue US plane was...
