Bulgaria to host three US military bases: minister
Bulgaria to host three US military bases: minister
(AFP)

14 May 2005

SOFIA - The US Congress has decided to use three Bulgarian military bases for the deployment of US forces, Defence Minister Nikolay Svinarov said on Saturday.

“It has not yet been clarified which exactly those bases will be, but we know there will be three of them,” Svinarov told BTA news agency.

A US governmental delegation was expected to arrive in Bulgaria in the coming days to discuss the bases, the Bulgarian army said last week.

The stationing of US troops in Bulgaria is part of a broader US strategy of shifting troops based in Europe further east.
The aim is to move soldiers from positions chosen to cope with a possible Soviet invasion of Europe to a deployment better suited to the current US preoccupation with terrorism and conflicts in the Middle East.

1. Oh boy ... who wouldn't love to be stationed in Bulgaria? Later, perhaps
Romania? :P

I'm ashamed that I complained about that three year stretch tour in Okinawa so much ... I'd do two of them to ONE in Bulgaria.

Why? Living around a poor and destitute population will make you become depressed and/or crazy almost as quick as bloody combat.

2. During the time of the Romans
the soldiers were sent to conquer and build bases around the known world. Eventually they mingled with and became part of the population even using the locals to help keep others in line. The fall of Rome had begun. The Roman discipline that had made their warriors so feared declined. They were so spread out it was difficult to manage and keep control of their forces. This and other factors ended a once great civilization.

5. Perhaps - I hope not though ...
I know absolutely nothing about Bulgaria but if their people are as proud of their lineage and culture as the natives of Okinawa, this "mingling of populations" will not happen.

Although the Asian culture is not mine (I'm Heinz 57 European mixture - but first and foremost American), however, there's much to be said about the dignity and perseverance of the Japanese in particular.

Anybody know about Bulgaria (culture, people, etc.) firsthand?

4. So that's what they're doing.....
outsourcing our military bases. It costs too much to keep them here in the U.S. so they'll take a page right out of Corporate America's playbook and outsource our military bases.

I cannot count the ways this maladministration has screwed America into the ground. :grr:
