LONDON (MarketWatch) -- Walt Disney Co. (DIS) plans to outsource about 1,000 jobs in its information technology division to save costs, although the move is expected to result in minimal layoffs, the Los Angeles Times reported on its Web site. The company told employees in a meeting Thursday that most of the workers would be moved into new jobs with two vendors, IBM Corp. (IBM) and Affiliated Computer Services Inc., (ACS) after negotiations are completed this month, the newspaper reported. Affected employees are in California, Florida and New York.

... 1.2 billion people, Disney World India, actually they are planning a Disney World Hong Kong, but I have no idea where they could find enough land to build it in that area.

I would love to see a Disney World Tibet!

4. Insider buzz (you guessed it)
Edited on Fri May-13-05 08:32 AM by joefree1
I'm in the "theme" entertainment biz and have many friends who work for or have worked for Disney. Actually that's not quite true. Very few people actually work directly for the mouse. Most are hired through temp companies so Disney can avoid messy issues like benefits and layoffs. Here's some more info.

Disney folk start getting nervous when they reach late forties or early fifties as Disney is known to get rid of workers nearing retirement age.

Hong Kong Disneyland is the first of many small "cookie cutter" parks Disney plans to build around the world in places like mainland China, India (how'd you know?). Hong Kong officials are rumored to be pissed that they're getting a Disneyland lite park.

There's still plenty of share holder battles going on over the tarnishing of the Disney corporate brand by Michael Eisner and his corporate cronies.

3. At least they told them in a meeting.
The IT group here were found out about their predicament through email.
Our company is outsourcing to Mickysoft who is outsourcing to 3rd or in this case 4th party vendors.
The IT people will all be let go at the end of May.

9. This could be the next trend for all companies' IT department

The keyword is "SAVE"

IT budget is one of the expensive items in a company's balance sheet. Hehe, wait for the housing bubble pop once these high-priced IT professionals are out of job.

But we can always join the army.

11. If this economy keeps up...or DOWN, as the case may be
You might be right on the mark. Employers will hire geezers like me, because we grew up with a work ethic, and if there are no jobs in our skillsets, they know we will take anything and actually show up for work every day, not be off partying and hormoning, as some youngsters are wont to do, and we will do without health insurance if we are just trying to stay in our homes and off the bloody sidewalk. This will leave no jobs for the bloom of youth, who will go to the army because there is nothing else. Then, as war without end does, the economy will follow along with a nice boomlet.

The chickens come home to roost though, when the troops do...the ones that live, anyway.

8. Isn't Las Vegas giving Disney a run for those
family vacation destination dollars? To tell the truth, I do find LV a more fun place to visit :woohoo:

12. Vegas has abandoned the "family friendly" crap
It's back to "gambling, booze, and broads," if you forgive the expression (think Rat Pack, Sinatra, that sort of meme). They don't WANT kids there anymore, and their ad campaign spells it out quite plainly. They want titties on the stage, whores at the bar, and the promise of anonymous sex with a mysterious stranger...oh, and of course they want you to play, because you can't win if you don't play, after all. You can't lose either, but they don't want to educate us on that score!

What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas...just like your cash!
