Bolton OK Expected on Party-Line Vote
http://story.news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050509/ap_on_re_us/un_ambassador

By SIOBHAN McDONOUGH, Associated Press Writer
2 hours, 25 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - John R. Bolton, the president's controversial choice to be ambassador to the United Nations, will likely win a party-line vote in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, according to the panel's chairman.

Sen. Richard Lugar (news, bio, voting record), R-Ind., told CBS' "Face the Nation" on Sunday that in the end, he suspected Republicans will vote for President Bush's nominee, and Democrats will vote unanimously against him. That would send Bolton's nomination to the full Senate on a 10-8 margin when the GOP-led committee meets Thursday.

The vote, delayed since mid-April, probably will come off as scheduled, Lugar predicted. But he acknowledged that Democrats who want more information about Bolton have many procedural ways to stall the vote.

Four committee Republicans supported postponement of the April vote in order to review fresh allegations against Bolton. While none has announced plans to oppose Bolton, it would take only one Republican to side with the committee's eight Democrats to create a tie vote — jeopardizing the nomination.

20. *2000* was our last chance for Democracy.
> 2006 is our last chance for democracy

No, 2000 was our last chance for Democracy. We blew it, and
Democracy won't be back for a long, long time. Now, it's just a
question of them sorting out the details of who gets what spoils.

4. In simple terms
Their bribery was better than our bribery.

I would estimate that Voinovich and Chafee have been bribed and threatened beyond anything we can imagine. If our side has any fault, I suspect it was that we either didn't try bribery or did it weakly. That's how power politics is played in "the land of the free and the home of the brave" AND and while I dispise it, I think we're going to have to learn to play the game well before we can change things.

14. The Difference Is, Dems Don't Threaten The Lives Of Repubs Families
Edited on Mon May-09-05 11:15 AM by Beetwasher
I suspect some Senators got a call from Cheney that went something like this:

"So, Senator, big vote coming up on Bolton soon. BTW, how's the family? Be a damn shame if anything happened to them".

5. I hope that one republican does the right thing
From what I'm reading this morning... if Bolton gets in, A city in the US will be nuked. They'll claim Iran did it scaring Americans once again into starting a war based on a lie. I think it will happen at the end of the school year in June. I hope I'm wrong.

You must provide a link for such an allegation -- "From what I'm reading this morning... if Bolton gets in, A city in the US will be nuked."

17. I did post a couple of links in response to another poster
read them and see what you think. I'm not saying there is a direct quote by any poster. What I am saying is this is what I think their game plan is.

10. This isn't the same as Lugar saying
he has the votes to approve Bolton. Lugar just says he suspects he will. What else can he say if he doesn't have the votes?
