Two US troops die in Afghan clash

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/4528213.stm

Two US marines were killed in a clash with a group of 25 insurgents they were tracking in eastern Afghanistan, the US military said.

The fighting broke out in Laghman province, north-west of the city of Jalalabad, on Sunday.

A US military statement said the marines were seeking out militants after receiving "intelligence" that they were operating in the area.

It said the dead were not being named until relatives had been informed.

"The Marines had intelligence that insurgents were in the region and sought out the insurgent location," the statement said.

"The Marines located the insurgents and an engagement ensued."

5. Much more
If you count mercs, CIA etc "civilians", which takes it well above 2000.

Not to mention other auxiliary forces, other coalition troops and Iraqi and Afganistan hired guns.

Two U.S. Marines killed in Afghan clash

KABUL (Reuters) - Two U.S. Marines were killed in a battle with insurgents in Afghanistan, the U.S. military said on Monday, the latest casualties in a surge of rebel violence.

The Marines were hunting for a group of insurgents northwest of the eastern city of Jalalabad, on Sunday, when the clash with about 25 rebels erupted, the U.S. military said in a statement.

Taliban rebels have launched a string of attacks on U.S.-led and Afghan government forces in recent weeks, after a winter lull in violence raised hope their insurgency might be fading.

More than 100 people, most of them militants but including several members of the 18,300-strong U.S.-led force, have been killed in the south and east since late March.

8. Afghans appeal to Taliban as 13 killed in clash
http://www.swissinfo.org/sen/swissinfo.html?siteSect=143&sid=5766092&cKey=1115636719000

KABUL (Reuters) - Afghanistan appealed to Taliban rebels and their leaders on Monday to give up their fight under an amnesty which has so far failed to stem violence, with 13 people, including two U.S. Marines, killed in the latest clash.

President Hamid Karzai has offered an amnesty to rank-and-file Taliban but the man in charge of efforts to persuade insurgents to give up said the offer would also apply to group leader Mullah Mohammad Omar and another anti-government militant chief, Gulbuddin Hekmatyar.

"We want peace with everyone, without exception," former president Sibghatullah Mojaddedi told a news conference, when asked about Omar and Hekmatyar. snip

The United States wholeheartedly supported the government amnesty programme but it was not open to everyone, a U.S. military spokesman said.
