Seven U.S. Servicemembers Killed in Iraq
BAGHDAD, Iraq - An explosion of insurgent violence in Iraq killed seven U.S. servicemembers over the weekend even as the Shiite-dominated parliament reached out Sunday to Sunni Arabs, approving four more of their number to serve as government ministers.

More than 300 people, including American forces, have been killed in a torrent of insurgent attacks since Cabinet was sworn in April 28 with seven positions undecided.

Parliament approved all six of the nominees placed before it Sunday by Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari. But one of the four Sunnis, the man tapped as human rights minister, rejected the post on the grounds of tokenism, tarnishing the Shiite premier's bid to include the disaffected minority believed to be driving Iraq's deadly insurgency.

who die from M Day to F Day. Where can I get the count of what it is today? 1599 or so?

I'd like to know the count of:
limbs lost
organs lost
minds lost
immune systems lost
dreams interrupted

children not held
games not played
future income lost
time spent at VA facilities
life dreams lost

and we know there is a parallel list of by the Iraqis and they didn't even start out hating us.

How much more are we to accept?

8. They didn't die for our freedoms, or for democracy
They died a needless and unnecessary death so that powerful men in America could enrich themselves at the expense of the Iraqi people. GIs will continue to die or be wounded for as long as we keep troops playing the role of colonial occupiers. The sooner we get the troops home, the better off we will be.

20. I am in complete agreement
Every time someone is interviewed, and praises the dead soldier for fighting to preserve our freedom, or democracy, I feel like beating my head against a brick wall.

You are 100% right, IG...the deaths and amputations and horrific brain injuries are doing nothing but letting the already rich enrich themselves even more. They can't stop now, it's as if they have become monsters with an insatiable greed for even more money and power. For them, it will never be enough.

For us at DU, though, it was too much when the first person died in this illegal, immoral war.

24. Yeah, well, you got that exactly right.
Vice President Wallace bluntly laid out in his 1944 Times article his concern about the same happening here in America:

"If we define an American fascist as one who in case of conflict puts money and power ahead of human beings, then there are undoubtedly several million fascists in the United States. There are probably several hundred thousand if we narrow the definition to include only those who in their search for money and power are ruthless and deceitful. ... They are patriotic in time of war because it is to their interest to be so, but in time of peace they follow power and the dollar wherever they may lead."

How Bush's grandfather helped Hitler's rise to power
The Guardian

Rumours of a link between the US first family and the Nazi war machine have circulated for decades. Now the Guardian can reveal how repercussions of events that culminated in action under the Trading with the Enemy Act are still being felt by today's president
snip---
The Guardian has obtained confirmation from newly discovered files in the US National Archives that a firm of which Prescott Bush was a director was involved with the financial architects of Nazism.

His business dealings, which continued until his company's assets were seized in 1942 under the Trading with the Enemy Act, has led more than 60 years later to a civil action for damages being brought in Germany against the Bush family by two former slave labourers at Auschwitz and to a hum of pre-election controversy.
snip----
More than 60 years after Prescott Bush came briefly under scrutiny at the time of a faraway war, his grandson is facing a different kind of scrutiny but one underpinned by the same perception that, for some people, war can be a profitable business.

Congressman Dennis Kucinich in 2002:

"America cannot and should not be the world's policeman. America cannot and should not try to pick the leaders of other nations. Nor should America and the American people be pressed into the service of international oil interests and arms dealers."

Etc., ad infinitum.

How can say that they're fighting for our freedoms in Iraq and Afghanistan. Since we entered these wars, our freedoms and liberties at home have been eroded.

Our kids are dying daily for OIL.

But the truth hurts and it requires real effort to deal with. I think more people "get it" but don't want to face their complicity - (voting for the asshole)much less deal with the fact that we, as a nation, have destroyed hundreds of thousands lives.

9. the US doesn't even control Bagdad
the continuing attacks illustrate that aside from the narrow confines of the green zone, nothing has been "secured" - none of the highways, no other part of the capital, no where else in the country.

the insurgent/resistance seem to attack where and when they please

a military success is impossible

What a joke.

Here, stick your finger in the dike while the dam collapses will you?

People are murdered all over the country every day by who knows which security agency or faction. Would you like to be the human rights minister. We currently have thousands of deaths and tortures you might want to look into. The job isn't that bad. If people are killed by Americans or their foreign contractors you can't investigate that.

19. Washington will have to rethink its commitment to Iraq. !!!!!
Levin said if Iraqis fail to write a constitution, elect a new government and develop reliable security forces by early next year, Washington will have to rethink its commitment to Iraq. Sen. Chuck Hagel (news, bio, voting record), a Nebraska Republican and member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, agreed.

Oh, so it's all the Iraqis' fault?

We destroyed their country and it's their fault for not putting it back together fast enough?

Here is what is going to happen: by "early next year" we will start withdrawing from Iraq because we will have to. We will blame whatever happens next on the Iraqis.

The stain of Iraq on America's honor will not be erased for generations.

Excerpt:
"Three of the U.S. victims were soldiers killed Sunday in bombings in central Iraq, the U.S. command said. One soldier was killed and a second was wounded during an attack on a patrol near Samarra, 60 miles north of Baghdad. Two others died in an explosion near Khaldiyah, 75 miles west of Baghdad, the military said.

On Saturday, three U.S. Marines and a sailor were killed in fighting with insurgents in western Iraq, some of whom fought from inside a hospital, the military said."

40. The American public doesn't care how many of its soldiers get
killed. Look at the recruitment numbers; anyone who joins is considered stupid, so why care if they're killed. Besides, it is what they are there for - haven't you heard the Emperor? He says the soldiers are dying in Iraq so that people don't die here. Get it? The public want the soldiers to die in Iraq; the Emperor has explained it all. US troops dying is a good thing. America has become a putrid place, where callous self interest is king - literally...

43. so very true......
so much of what this country has sunk to began when Reagan took office - the self-centeredness and materialism and greed of our culture. If you are old enough to remember what it was like before then, you realize how screwed up we became when he took office. Carter was a wonderful role model for what our country could be but Reagan and his ilk ushered in the culture of greed and might makes right.
