Latest car bombs kill 24 in towns near Baghdad
MSNBC News Services
Updated: 12:01 p.m. ET May 6, 2005
BAGHDAD, Iraq - Two suicide car bombs killed at least 24 Iraqis on Friday, continuing nine days of violence that have left a death toll topping 270 people.

One bomb exploded at a market in Suwayrah, killing at least 16 people and wounding 47, police said. The town, 25 miles south of the capital, is in a notorious insurgent stronghold known as the Triangle of Death.

The other bomb destroyed a police minibus at a checkpoint in Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit, killing at least eight policemen and wounding seven people, officials said.

The attacks were part of a surge of violence since Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari announced his new government on April 28.
Those assaults included 73 people who died when suicide bombers with explosives strapped to their bodies set them off in lines of job applicants outside two recruitment centers for security forces in Baghdad and the northern city of Irbil.

7. Ah, but these Iraqis are killed by other Iraqis
Some would call it a civil war caused by the invasion.

But the spin is that we are there to defend Iraqis against terrorists. And these deaths are what we're there to stop.

6. Update for Fri.: Bombers kill 32 Iraqis, 14 corpses found
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/iraq_dc

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Suicide bombers killed 32 Iraqi civilians and police and 14 corpses were found in Baghdad on Friday in escalating violence that has cast doubts over the new government's ability to defeat insurgents.

In the deadliest blast of the day, a suicide bomber in a car blew himself up near a vegetable market in a southern Iraqi town, killing at least 23 people and wounding 44, a police official said.

The attack hit the mostly Shi'ite town of Suwayra, reinforcing fears that guerrilla violence will spill over into civil war as Iraq's leaders struggle to ease sectarian tensions.

In Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit, a suicide car bomber blew up his vehicle beside a minibus carrying policemen, killing at least nine policemen and wounding several, local police said.

10. That statistic really makes those Iraqis want to run out and sign up.
Not.

But, with their unemployment so high, they'll take a chance. Just like we would. People will risk their lives to support their families. Why can't the fundies see what bush has reduced these people to.

12. Does this feel like a slow-motion Tet Offensive to anyone else?
That's the first impression I got after this kept going on for days on end, bombing after bombing.

15. But it would be so irresponsible if we withdraw!
I mean, god forbid the Iraqi's try to form their own country(ies) without our meddling in everything. Those poor brownies want and need us there to make them safe!

17. and most Americans are oblivious
I spoke to a high school class yesterday about the 1970 Kent State shootings. I was rather stunned to learn that, of the 25 there, only one had heard of the shootings. Even more amazing to me, the very politically active teacher (born in 1970) had never heard of Jackson State. Then I asked one kid how many US soldiers had been killed in Iraq. And he said, 'The last I heard, about 280.' His jaw dropped when I told him we were rapidly closing in on 1600.

270 Iraqis dead in a week..... Well, at least Saddam isn't killing them anymore. /sarcasm
