Base closure panel airs concern

Members ask how they can make decisions on which facilities to shut down when 70,000 troops are to return.

WASHINGTON -- Pentagon officials Wednesday tried to assure skeptical Base Realignment and Closure commission members that a massive movement of troops from overseas and a major study of future force needs would not nullify the decisions they must make on domestic military facilities.

But the commissioners, all of whom have considerable experience in defense issues, remained concerned about the overlap of the two long-range Pentagon actions and their time-limited process.

The Pentagon is expected to release the BRAC list May 13 and the commission will hold a hearing on the recommendations May 16.
