3. Actually, they changed it...
...it's now the "Terrorist Information Awareness" program...

See, they don't want total knowledge, just knowledge of terrorists, no worries mate, Big Brother isn't watching.

Need more details on this, though unlike Oracle, I can see where MS might be enough of a dictatorial maverick to pull something like this...

4. I was kind of taken aback but
Shouldn't be suprised. The arrogance of these guys is not to be misunderestimated.

TIA is Ashcroft at his most blatant.

Doesn't MS have all the resources and knowledge to impliment this? They can call it whatever they want but it boils down to a sludge of reaking unamerican spying on our citizens etc. etc. rant huff and puff.... I've run out of words to describe this continual assault on out liberties! Gawd, I just hate them. I hates them to pieces!

But then I really only heard a blip as I chanced to surf by the network while avoiding commercials. Not sure if this will actually pan out as a story. That's why I was asking.

5. Conflict of interest or savy move...

...here is an article from 11/02/02 concerning Microsoft and Homeland Security:

November 18, 2002
Feds Back Cyber-Projects

Congress last week set aside $903 million over the next five years for new education programs and public/private partnerships that are designed to battle attacks on computers. Almost immediately, vendors began racing to bid for a share of the pie.

Microsoft Corp. last week named former U.S. Coast Guard officer Thomas Richey to the company's new post of federal director of homeland security. According to the company, the job will focus on promoting cross-agency collaboration. But the post will likely help the Redmond, Wash., software developer's voice be heard when requests are made for part of the federal funding, observers said.

7. Congress killed TIA
http://www.wired.com/news/politics/0,1283,59606,00.html

The controversial Terrorism Information Awareness program, which would troll Americans' personal records to find terrorists before they strike, may soon face the same fate Congress meted out to John Ashcroft in his attempt to create a corps of volunteer domestic spies: death by legislation.

The Senate's $368 billion version of the 2004 defense appropriations bill, released from committee to the full Senate on Wednesday, contains a provision that would deny all funds to, and thus would effectively kill, the Terrorism Information Awareness program, formerly known as Total Information Awareness. TIA's projected budget for 2004 is $169 million.

11. Tried to kill it
Is it really dead. Pointdexter is still out there and Ashcroft is still covering the stone boobies. I'm sure they are right where they want to be. Eavesdropping, subverting, etc. etc.

15. I totally agree it is not dead

Poindexter and Ollie North thwarted the will of Congress when they dealt arms for hostages and lied about it.

Of course Poindexter will ignore Congress and continue building his Big Brother machine.

13. I never had it
turned on to begin with.

Use Debian, apt-get is better than Window$ update because it updates the applications that are installed as well as the system, you can automate the task, and there's no valid/invalid product key crap to worry about.

I tell ya, if anyone perfects WINE to the point that it can run any Window$ application, Micro$oft will have no place on any of my hard drives.

16. I'm no fan of Microsoft but....
until Linux becomes much easier to use in the general public's eyes, it doesn't stand a snowball's chance in hell. Linux advocates need to start pushing the fact that it is a fairly easy process. You must remember that the average person wants their computer just to work (I know, I know, if they want it to work, why are they buying Windows?), and knows as much about computers as they know about the human genome map.
