Even used, some Prius hybrid cars selling for above sticker price
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2005/05/05/financial/f135443D79.DTL

Sheila Catoira wanted a fuel-efficient Toyota Prius hybrid so badly, she found a used model online and paid $1,000 more than the car would have cost new.

With the demand for a gas-electric Prius far outstripping supply, some buyers are plunking down a premium for cars that are thousands of miles old. The trade-off: They don't have to wait for months on dealers' waiting lists.
...
Although hybrids represented less than 1 percent of the 17 million new vehicles sold last year, the U.S. hybrid market has grown by more than 960 percent since 2000, when 7,781 were sold, according to data released last week by the Southfield, Mich.-based firm R.L. Polk & Co.

And in related news, GM & Ford stocks STINK! (/jaysherman)

1. Note to self: Remember to lock the doors & set the alarm in our '04 Prius
;)

We've had ours since November '03, ordering and buying it on sheer faith in Toyota products and the hope it'd work out. We never regretted the purchase.

2. Better idea: Get on a waiting list now
and when you're number's up, sell the old one and get the new car smell plus a little profit. ;)

8. My dtr. also bought one several years ago & is totally happy
with it. She watched me drive Saabs for a couple of decades, going back to when a lot of yahoos made fun of its aerodynamic design - and saw me get 200,000 miles or more out of each one, and walk away uncrippled from the one that was totaled by a truck on the PA turnpike; so she had a practical approach to choosing a car. I'd love to get one too, but my current Saab should be good for another 60,000 miles - good thing, since GM may drag Saab down the bankruptcy hole with it.

4. I hear Rolls-Royce has a similar waiting list
and used Rolls go for considerably more than new ones since bidding wars erupt.

I haven't yet achieved an income worthy of sustaining a Rolls Royce and so I haven't bothered to verify that bit of urban folklore.

5. What was that fella's name a few years ago?
You know, the one who said we ought to be innovating and building these things here at home? Oh that's right, it was fucking AL GORE.

Too bad he lost that election. No wait, he totally DIDN'T.

10. Licensed Toyota Hybrid Technology
They developed it in-house,
then found they would have bumped into Toyota's patents.

Still built here in the USA though.

11. This Hybrid IS an SUV...
Edited on Thu May-05-05 09:31 PM by AndyTiedye
...but it doesn't guzzle gas like other SUVs.

It actually gets better mileage than the Highlander or the Lexus hybrid SUVs, and it has been available since last summer.

It would be nice if Ford actually advertised it a bit though.

14. Electric cars get their energy somewhere, usually from coal.
Edited on Thu May-05-05 09:50 PM by Massacure
Your probably better of with petrol than coal, especially the way Bush has dismantled the environmental laws.

They were a novel idea though.

16. I will have to drive by the Toyota dealership in Paris this weekend
A couple of weeks ago they had a sign out that they had Hybrids available.
Wouldn't it be cheaper to do a nationwide search and find a new one than to pay new prices for a used one?
