Senate changes elections measure during debate

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The Senate adopted proposals Wednesday that would limit early voting to eight hours on weekdays and require that early voting polling places be spread across a county to give all voters easy access.
The Senate moved a heavily amended elections bill toward a final floor vote with several provisions affecting early voting. Another amendment would prohibit political parties from accepting in-kind contributions that did not provide a direct benefit to the party, such as funneling money to politicians for personal use.
The measure still needs a final vote from the Senate and the signature of Gov. Jeb Bush to become law. The Secretary of State's office supports the bill.
The bill (HB 1567) would limit early voting to eight hours a day on week days, but give supervisors flexibility to choose an eight-hour period between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. as long as the time was the same each day. It would also limit early voting to a total of eight hours each weekend.
Without the change, early voting sites must be open for at least eight hours each day.
