Senate changes elections measure during debate

By BRENT KALLESTAD
Associated Press Writer
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The Senate adopted proposals Wednesday that would limit early voting to eight hours on weekdays and require that early voting polling places be spread across a county to give all voters easy access.

The Senate moved a heavily amended elections bill toward a final floor vote with several provisions affecting early voting. Another amendment would prohibit political parties from accepting in-kind contributions that did not provide a direct benefit to the party, such as funneling money to politicians for personal use.

The measure still needs a final vote from the Senate and the signature of Gov. Jeb Bush to become law. The Secretary of State's office supports the bill.

The bill (HB 1567) would limit early voting to eight hours a day on week days, but give supervisors flexibility to choose an eight-hour period between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. as long as the time was the same each day. It would also limit early voting to a total of eight hours each weekend.

Without the change, early voting sites must be open for at least eight hours each day.

1. I wouldn't trust anything that the GOP & Bush put out
in Florida. Florida is being identified as the cesspool of American corruption and inefficiency right next to Texas.

2. Why do the Repugs hate early voting?
When they can't find anything else to fuck with in Arkansas, they'll screw around with early voting hours--discussing it to death while our school system rots away.

:wtf: are they afraid of?

3. Because in FL (I don't know about other states)
Kerry won in the Early Voting big time. It's much harder for the Repugs to commit fraud with EV, they much prefer absentee ballots for padding their numbers.

4. with early voting, more people vote
historically, republicans are more faithful voters (no pun intended). It is better for democrats when turnout is high. Early voting increases the number of people who vote.
