Poll: Pataki still down; not much oomph for Weld
ALBANY, N.Y. -- Republican Gov. George Pataki's prospects are better but still bleak, while a potential GOP alternative, former Massachusetts Gov. William Weld, hasn't exactly caught fire with voters, a statewide poll reported Wednesday.

The poll, from the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, showed state Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, a Democrat, leading Pataki, 53 percent to 32 percent, in a possible 2006 gubernatorial matchup. A February poll from the Hamden, Conn.-based institute had Spitzer leading Pataki, 54 percent to 30 percent.

...snip...

Some buzz was created in New York political circles last month when Weld said he was seriously considering running for governor in his native New York, if Pataki did not seek re-election. Weld moved back to New York in 2000.

But the latest Quinnipiac poll had Spitzer leading Weld, 60 percent to 16 percent.

Maybe Fox could follow up after "American Idol" ends with a open casting call for Republican candidates who could make speeches each week and get whittled down by viewers phone-in votes, until they have a nominee...

1. New Yorker
Weld Who? I am going with Spitzer. The man has chutzpah. That is exactly what we need, especially after Patakai.

3. Spitzer!
Absolutely Spitzer.

(Weld was the Republican Governor of Massachusetts who ran against Kerry for the Senate back in the late 90s)

4. Pretty pathetic for the Republicans
The best person they can get hasn't been in office for 10 years and when he did it wasn't even for New York. And that's just the Governor's race. The Senate "race" should be even more interesting.
