Pro Baseball Pitcher Honors his Two Moms

SUMMARY: In what some say is progress against pro baseball's anti-gay image, a pitcher who is open about his two lesbian mothers has reported that they are a non-issue among his teammates.

In what some community leaders hail as progress against pro baseball's anti-gay image, a pitcher who is open about his two lesbian mothers has reported that they are a non-issue among his teammates.

"I haven't heard much," Cincinnati Reds pitcher Joe Valentine told the Chicago Tribune. "I thought it was going to be a little bit bigger deal, but I wasn't doing it because I wanted it to be a big deal. It was something I tried to do for my parents and for the gay community. They're a huge part of the population."

Well, I'm outraged about these two lesbians. They should have taught him to play soccer instead of baseball. ;-)

3. Cincinnati has a reputation of being just a little less progressive
than other cities? How do you think Reds fans will react to this story?
I'll trade you the Phillies bullpen, worst ERA in the NL 5.59. And throw in Thome,Bell,Lieberthal and Burrell for good measure.

2. Cheers to him
Does anybody know what HS he graduated from? I am a TA on Long Island. In one 1st class I assisted in there were two children who had two Mommies. Both couples were very active in volunteering to help out with school activities and projects. It never ceases to amaze me how bigoted and blind people still are in this country. Gay couples with children are a reality in this country. The children in a classroom will routinely talk about their parents and their home life. Not all of them are living with their biological mother and father. So many are living with just one parent, grandparents, step-parents, and yes, even two Mommies or two Daddies. The "traditional" family is becoming fewer and far between It is absurd to try to shield children from this. They can see it all around them.

5. Bravo for him!
For not being afraid of bigots and talking about his "nontraditional" family.

11. He is a brave person, to be so open in this day and age.
It is a shame it requires bravery to speak openly about his family, though.

12. What's HIS sexual orientation?
No mention of it. Wonder if those evil lesbos turned him into a newt, too. Burn them, I say!

Just kidding. But seriously, I wonder which side he plays for, if you know what I mean.

16. Not for nothin' ...
but EVERY gay person I know was raised in a heterosexual home.
Does this mean that straight parents are a bad influence on kids and their sexual identities?

24. Good point. But more powerful is the fact that this guy just got married.
To his High School sweetheart, so I'm told by another DUer who knows the guy and says he's just a terrific individual.

14. 15% of the population cheers, 5% gnashes its teeth
And about 80% of the people don't much care one way or the other, unless his two moms get on the mound with him.

The fight over gay rights is all over but the shouting, mostly from the bigots who are losing another of their pet targets. Not to say they aren't fully capable of a lot of nastiness yet, but their wild-eyed rantings are losing their punch in the face of the incredible ordinariness of our g/l/b/t/i fellow citizens.

19. Bravo
I am glad he did this and very glad to be a Reds fan. Too bad that like most teams who aren't the Yankees we have no real shot of winning but still it is nice to see this.

22. Money talks in baseball
We can start off good, though I admit to not looking at standings lately, but in the end the money that a New York brings to the party lets them buy penants.

23. Mmm hmm
How closely do you follow baseball? Because if you had any idea on how horrible the Yankees are, you wouldn't be making that statement.

25. Rather two stable gay parents...
I was talking to a relative who was once a volunteer at a day care center. She mentioned that several children had gay parents, and this day care could care less about the orientation of the parents. She also said the parents were just like hetero couples, and it was no big deal. She said, I'd rather see two stable gay parents with children than a kid shuffled between multiple foster homes....

26. Pro baseball has an anti-gay image?
Spoiled rotten, drug abusing, money grubbing image maybe. I guess I need to keep up on which sports are the most homophobic.
