RawStory: Dems sit tight, await DeLay investigation
Democrats are publicly quiet with regards to a likely ethics investigation against House Majority Tom DeLay (R-TX), RAW STORY has learned, and both sides of the aisle are cautious about igniting a conflagration that could burn members of both parties.

. . .

“We expect them to go after us, knowing the way these guys play the game,” a Democratic member told the paper. “They are fairly ruthless.” The Member added, “If they think one of their people is going down, they are going to take at least one of ours down with him.”

A Democratic aide told the paper Democrats “will not start lobbing complaints against Republicans” unless the GOP fires the first shot, or if the ethics committee fails to act on some of the serious allegations “in the public domain” against Republican lawmakers, including DeLay and Ney. This was also the sense of aides speaking with RAW STORY Monday.

Republicans quietly acknowledged to Roll Call that they could suffer more from all-out ethics war. “In the end, we’re the most affected by it,” said a senior House GOP aide. “We are in the majority, and we have a hell of a lot more to lose than they do. We have to be very careful here.”

1. yeah, great tactic. They'll hang themselves, right?
Edited on Mon May-02-05 02:29 PM by thebigidea
Just like they never, ever, ever, ever fucking do.

Delay will not be removed without constant kicking, screaming, yelling, mudslinging, and ranting.

This investigation will go nowhere - people will "Refrain from commenting until the investigation is complete."

... and it'll be complete 2 months after the '06 elections, having cleared him of all charges. But by that time, the Delay troubles will have long since forgotten by the ohsoliberal media.

Could you imagine Republicans ever pulling this tactic? Oh, lets not talk about Clinton until the investigations are complete.

3. There is a huge danger out there on the Abramoff investigation
I can see the GOP starting an investigation on Delay to keep it channelled away from a lot of the stuff coming out of Abramoff.

If they start it they can control it, but if they wait they may be forced to go somewhere they don't want to go.

5. We want the investigation to go nowhere.
Delay is more useful to the Dems right where he is, as a target.

9. we? You took a poll or something?
Edited on Mon May-02-05 04:05 PM by thebigidea
he may be a target, but "some people" want the GOP to do the firing.

highly freaking unlikely, unless he's so damaged and dogged by scandal that they are forced to turn on him.

but that won't happen if everyone shuts up about it and we wait around for Republicans to investigate and punish him...

10. Yep. took a poll.
And 90% of in-the-know Democrats think that Delay hanging around helps us. These same Democrats also know that the Reid/Pelosi tag team is going to keep dripping stories about Delay to the print media for many, many months to come.

Watch.

4. I think of this as the real nuclear option
there's a lot of brinkmanship going on under the shadow of mutually assured destruction. The balance of terror weighs more in the Democrats' favor because the GOP has much more to lose.

8. "Unless the GOP fires the first shot"???
What manner of horseshit be this? Who is this unnamed (naturally) Democratic aide whose party has been getting shelled regularly for the past 25 years who thinks the GOP has yet to fire its first shot?

18. There was an agreement to not bring this stuff up.
But Delay was so bad that they couldn't help it. It could turn into all out war if both sides decide to go at it. One some level, the country could be better off.

Rep. Norm Dicks (D-Wash.) Had Lobbyists pay for Trip
Mon May 02 2005 09:40:10 ET

The controversy over lobbyist-funded Congressional travel has brushed yet another Member. Rep. Norm Dicks (D-Wash.) took a five-day jaunt to Miami in February. The original travel disclosure Dicks’ office filed with the House Clerk listed the sponsor as the Spectrum Group, a defense lobbying firm in Alexandria, Va.

That would be a violation of House Rules, ROLL CALL reports on Monday.

They will continue to leak this stuff out and give the general public
a complete distrust of both parties. We need to push this now.

We can't be doing this shit either. It sucks, but if one of ours gets legitimately burned, so be it.

with the bath water/let the chips fall where they may and any of the other quips that come to mind. Seems funny when Clinton was being speared the Repubs didn't worry about one of them getting squeezed since they were going for the ultimate jugular they let whomever get squeezed and I remember Rep Livingston getting the squeeze almost immediately.
What next?
