Blacks Call for Amends as Grisly Lynching in Texas City Is Revisited
http://ap.tbo.com/ap/breaking/MGBQZWIC68E.html

WACO, Texas (AP) - Nearly a century after a black teenager was stabbed, burned and hanged in front of some 15,000 Waco residents, some black residents are calling for the city to make amends.

The slaying was just one of the 4,700 lynchings in the South from the late 1800s to early 1900s, but it was one of the few photographed in progress, capturing images of a mob dragging 17-year-old Jesse Washington from the courthouse, cutting him with knives and dangling him over a fire.

Newspapers referred to the 1916 killing as the "Waco horror" after the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People's magazine published an article and the rare pictures, now displayed in the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, Tenn. snip

City officials did not return calls seeking comment Friday. Three years ago, county commissioners rejected a request to create a plaque to explain a courthouse painting of Waco history that includes a tree with a noose.

1. It is important to acknowledge our racist history
which wasn't confined to the South. There was a murderous race riot in Springfield IL, and numerous towns in the North passed "black laws" which said no person of color was allowed to remain within city limits after sundown.

To forget history is to invite its repitition.

3. You read these stories, then look at pictures. . .
such as you've posted below, and the total hypocrisy of justifying our attack on Fallujah because four mercenaries were killed and burned and hung on that bridge must smack any thinking person hard in the face. Where in our acts do we differ? Because people in this country did it "decades ago" . . . as though time absolves all guilt and imparts moral superiority.

5. Another side effect of privilege
People who've had the privilege of lynching abd abusing others without reproach don't think they've done anything wrong, and pass along this attitude to their descendants. I found that painfully apparent when * as governor, was reticent in passing hate crime laws after that man in TX was dragged to death...

I can hear a typical bubba...

"yassir, it's alright to kill ______s because my daddy said they ain't worth nothing, and better off dead"

6. Waco has always been known as the buckle of Texas' Bible Belt
Just plain 'ol fundies. I'm sure they did the lynching for Gawd and all 15,000 sang Hallelujah.
