North Korea may carry out nuclear test by June: Kyodo
http://www.swissinfo.org/sen/swissinfo.html?siteSect=143&sid=5738173&cKey=1114827618000

TOKYO (Reuters) - The United States has warned the International Atomic Energy Agency that North Korea has been preparing to carry out an underground nuclear test since March and could go ahead as early as June, Kyodo news agency said on Saturday.

The report, which quoted diplomatic sources in Vienna, came a day after the chief U.S. negotiator to stalled talks on Pyongyang's nuclear ambitions said Washington believed North Korea might be trying to harvest material for a nuclear bomb from a shut-down reactor.

According to the sources, who said the information was obtained by satellite photos and from within North Korea, Pyongyang was preparing to test a small-scale plutonium device.

The United States had called on China to urge North Korea to halt its preparations, but there were no signs that Beijing had done so, the sources said.

U.S. warns of possible N. Korea nuke test

GEORGE JAHN
Associated Press

VIENNA, Austria - The United States is warning allies that North Korea may be ready to carry out an underground nuclear test as early as June, diplomats said Saturday.

The diplomats told The Associated Press that the information had been apparently gathered in part from satellite imagery. They spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of discussing intelligence information.

The reported U.S. warnings reflected growing fears in Washington that the North is going ahead with efforts to develop nuclear weapons after South Korean officials said Pyongyang had recently shut down a reactor, possibly to harvest plutonium that could be used in an underground test.

The 5-megawatt reactor at Yongbyon generates spent fuel rods laced with plutonium, but they must be removed and reprocessed to extract the plutonium for use in an atomic weapon. They can be removed only if the reactor has been shut down.

North Korea restarted the reactor after expelling U.N. monitors at the end of 2002.

5. Maybe they'll blow themselves up
I recall in a Russian space program video where a top general or political heavyweight of some kind was so confident of their technology, he set up chairs just 100 yards or so from a rocket launch. Other high level technicians and engineers were intimidated into sitting with him. Anyway, the rocket blew up, turned them into crispy critters, and set their space program back rather significantly.

I can envision something like this with N. Korea and their nuke testing. Just wishful thinking...

6.  They are making Bush look like an ass

And doing a damn good job of it. Here's this country, says it doesn't have WMD, UN inspectors can't find any, and we bomb the shit out of it and turn it into a training ground for our military. Then here's this other country, they for sure have them, the international community knows they have them, they have threatened us but we do nothing. Bush is a paper tiger.

Got nukes and Bush won't do nothing. Don't have nukes and Bush is sending Shock And Awe and then he is going to invade you. So naturally everyone is doing their damnedest to get some nukes right now just as fast as they possibly can. But we are all safer now.

The United States is warning that North Korea has been preparing for an underground nuclear test that could occur as soon as June.

13. Last year's mushroom cloud was probably a nuclear test.
It has gone down the memory hole now, but North Korea has in all likelihood already showed the world it has nuclear capability. For some reason there is an ongoing fiction that this didn't really happen.
