ITHACA -- Accompanied by a crowd of shouting supporters, a handful of Cornell University students were charged with trespassing and resisting arrest Thursday by university police after refusing to leave Cornell President Jeffrey Lehman's office for several hours.

But that didn't stop students Daniel Pearlstein, Daisy Torres, Jordan Wells, Kjirsten Alexander and Patrick Young from locking their arms together with steel pipes and sitting defiantly in Lehman's office to protest the University Avenue parking lot they say would pave unnecessarily over green space. The 176-space lot is part of the university's West Campus Residential Initiative.

By about 5:30 p.m., all eight students had been charged by Cornell Police with trespassing, while Pearlstein, Torres, Wells, Alexander and Young each incurred an additional charge of resisting arrest. The students are scheduled to appear in Ithaca City Court at 9:30 a.m. May 4.

During a brief press conference held just after 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Bruce confirmed that the eight students were still inside Lehman's office. He said the students were in violation of Titles II and III of campus code, were engaging in a "completely unacceptable form of protest," and had "taken advantage" of Lehman's willingness to meet with them that morning. "We acknowledge and respect students' creativity and energy they put into making their advocacy," Bruce said. "But today, they crossed the line.
