Pope Benedict XVI will make his first pilgrimage in Italy in May
The Associated Press

VATICAN CITY (AP) _ Pope Benedict XVI will make his first pilgrimage in Italy on May 29, a day trip to a religious congress in the southern city of Bari, officials said Friday.

The late Pope John Paul II had been hoping to make the trip but in January named a cardinal to represent him because of his frail condition, officials said at the time.

Faithful gathered in Bari's cathedral broke into applause when the archbishop of Bari announced the new pope would visit the city, the ANSA news agency said.

Vatican officials said the pope would travel to Bari in the morning, address the National Eucharistic Congress and return to Rome the same day.

4. Makes sense
Also reading many of Benedict XV's documents shows some of what made the choice of names fitting. That was a pre-Vatican Pope whose criticism of the war was firmly matched to criticism of criticism of the moral state of society(secularism, greed, etc.). Through this period and going into the restive times after that Pepe was equally or more concerned with the status of authority toward the Powers that be despite their abysmal leadership. This seems to exactly match John Paul in the conjoining of anti-war and anti-secularism models. The pre-Vatican Council attitudes of the other Benedict were typical of the times but I imagine the new Pope is trying deliberately to assuage unpleasant comparisons to an authoritarian mindset.

This is consolidation time which should be fairly easy. The real proof will come in actions and speeches dealing with morality and war and Church discipline. Other encyclical by kinder Popes touched off surprising controversies that did little good for anyone. I continually hope to be pleasantly surprised. I await the shock of even better. I keep my spiritual flak jacket close at hand.
