Governor (Schwarzenegger) endorses Minutemen on border
Edited on Fri Apr-29-05 12:17 AM by Newsjock

Carla Marinucci and Mark Martin, Chronicle Political Writers
Friday, April 29, 2005

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, just a week after apologizing for suggesting California should "close the borders,'' warmly praised the Minutemen project -- an armed citizens group -- on Thursday for doing a terrific job of stopping illegal immigration from Mexico.

... Schwarzenegger, appearing on the conservative Los Angeles KFI radio's "John and Ken'' talk show, was asked his views of the Minutemen, who are using armed volunteers along the border in Arizona. The governor endorsed the effort, saying, "It just shows that it works.''

... Schwarzenegger's comments drew a rebuke from Latino politicians, as had those last week, and put the governor in a public disagreement with Bush. The president and the U.S. Border Patrol have criticized the Minutemen as interfering with law enforcement, and posing a danger to citizens and immigrants aiming to cross the border illegally.

... It is illegal to interfere with law enforcement, and if the governor is promoting that, then maybe we should think of bringing action against him,'' said Art Torres, state Democratic Party chairman. "When he took an oath of office to defend and protect the Constitution of the United States, that includes all of its laws. And when the president of the United States and the Border Patrol both suggest that these activities are not only not helpful, but possibly illegal, that needs to be seriously examined.'''

California turned solidly blue when Wilson pushed Prop 187. Reps lost the hispanic vote until Arnie. He got a higher percentage than previous Reps. So thanks Arnie. Dems need the latino/a vote. So glad you are helping us.

Edited on Fri Apr-29-05 12:27 AM by Democat
The show he was on is one of the many media outlets in California that constantly attacked Davis and who just as fanatically defend Arnold, no matter how many lies he gets caught in or how he screws the state.

The entire California media hates Democrats and does everything they can to promote the Republican Party and Arnold.

California governor praises Minuteman volunteers watching Arizona border

Friday, April 29, 2005

(04-29) 02:11 PDT SACRAMENTO, (AP) --

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who outraged some Mexican-American groups last week by calling for a closed border, has praised the Minuteman Project in which hundreds of volunteers have been patrolling the Arizona-Mexico boundary to spot illegal crossers.

"I think they've done a terrific job, and look, they've cut down the crossing of illegal immigrants by a huge percentage," Schwarzenegger said in an interview Thursday on KFI-AM's "The John & Ken Show."

The Republican governor accused the federal government of failing to control the borders and, in fact, encouraging illicit crossers by providing them access to water.
(snip)

There are plans to expand the project to California in June.

Schwarzenegger "does not oppose" the group coming to California, said Margita Thompson, his press secretary.

Edited on Fri Apr-29-05 09:48 AM by NNN0LHI

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who outraged some Mexican-American groups last week by calling for a closed border, praised the civilian volunteer Minuteman Project for its patrols to spot illegal immigrants. snip

The Republican governor accused the federal government of failing to control the border and said it encouraged illicit crossers by giving them access to water. snip

Nativo V. Lopez, president of the Mexican-American Political Association, called Schwarzenegger's comments Thursday "nothing short of base racism." snip

Schwarzenegger's comments came a week after he faced criticism for telling a gathering of newspaper publishers that the United States needed to "close the borders." He apologized the next day, blaming faulty English and saying he really meant the borders should be secured.

50. 'They Keep Coming ...' - Pete Wilson 1994 TV Campaign Ad.
Wilson made immigration a touchstone of his 1994 campaign, and ran a controversial ad with blurred images of immigrants crossing the border illegally and an ominous voice-over that warned, "They keep coming." He also hitched his campaign to a ballot initiative, Proposition 187, that would have eliminated social welfare benefits for undocumented residents. The initiative passed easily, and Wilson was reelected in a landslide, but it served as a rallying cry for California Latinos, who have since flocked to the polls in record numbers, and have voted Democratic nearly 4-1.

Pete Wilson was Arnold's 2003 Campaign Manager.

33. Gov. Schwarzenegger Signals He'd Welcome Minutemen on California Border
Governor signals he'd welcome Minutemen on California border

James Sterngold, Mark Martin, Chronicle Staff Writers

Saturday, April 30, 2005

Los Angeles -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger responded to harsh criticism about his support for armed volunteers who are patrolling the Arizona border with Mexico by praising the effort further Friday -- and an aide said they are welcome to operate in California.

Reaction to the governor's support of the Minuteman Project ranged Friday from a state assemblyman who suggested the encouragement was "dangerous'' and "increases the likelihood of people getting hurt,'' to applause from an activist who said Schwarzenegger's comments were likely to boost his effort to bring citizen border patrols to California.

The governor had called the news conference in Los Angeles to introduce his new education secretary, Alan Bersin, a hard-charging administrator from San Diego, where he had been the superintendent of schools. Bersin expressed a desire to work with California teachers but also promised to fight if they resist the governor's plans to reward successful teachers in the effort to improve school performance.

But any attempt to focus attention on Schwarzenegger's education agenda was short-lived, as the questions quickly turned to the border issue, always a hot-button political topic in California.

37. Arnold is very stupid. Let's remember that for 2006. He can be baited!
OK, so his special election fizzled and he struggles to get signatures without the highly organized CTA/Nurses/Fire&Safety union members showing up and discouraging anyone who might sign. Now he's appointed an education Secretary who threatens the teachers on a lesser issue (merit pay as opposed to screwing their pension plan). What a moron! I hope CA Dems keep sticking it to this guy until he explodes in public and reflexively produces the sieg heil salute.

BTW, you know these Minutemen are going to cross the line big time. That will be the mess that undoes Arnold and CA Republicans for 50 years or forever.

Edited on Sat Apr-30-05 11:27 PM by Barkley

When Pete Wilson was governor he scapegoated immigrants too with his endorsement of prop 187.

Remember Wilson 1994 campaign commercials showing immigrants crossing the border and the voice saying:

"They keep coming..."

If they want to stop undocumented immigration, just make mandatory 25-year prison term for anyone caught hiring an undocumented worker.
