Arizona Border Patrol Looks to Canada
Arizona Border Patrol Looks to Canada
Controversial Arizona 'Minuteman' Citizen Border Patrol Wants to Expand to Canadian Border
By LARA JAKES JORDAN Associated Press Writer
The Associated Press

WASHINGTON Apr 26, 2005 — A controversial civilian patrol group that has been monitoring the Mexican border for illegal immigrants is looking to expand its mission to the Canadian border, organizers said Tuesday.

Minuteman Project leaders said their volunteers this month alerted federal authorities to more than 330 cases of illegal immigrants crossing into the United States over a 23-mile stretch of Arizona's southern border. Now they plan to extend their patrol along the rest of the border with Mexico and are helping to organize similar efforts in four states that neighbor Canada.

"In the absence of the federal government doing its mandated duty to secure our borders, we will pick up the slack. Reluctantly," said Chris Simcox, a Minuteman co-organizer who also operates Civil Homeland Defense, another Arizona group that monitors illegal immigrants.

"We shouldn't have to be doing this," Simcox told reporters in Washington, where he was to meet with lawmakers Wednesday. "But at this point, we will continue to grow this operation also to the northern border."

I doubt these guys are very "reluctant". They look like they get off on playing Posse, or Soldier, or whatever it is they think they're doing.

29. Please fill us in on this incident
The only incident I am aware of that occurred with the Minutemen is that one illegal immigrant was photographed holding a shirt after he was given food and water.

Keeping my eye on the beach as we speak, er type... None of those pesky Canadians are gonna be slinking into MY country. The Canadian season is about to get into full swing. Damn them, they come into this country in their boats, spending their money, damn them.

12. Even the Hollywood* movies are likely as not filmed in Van or TO
why not just stay up in the land of the free and let the Minutemen* freeze their butts off for nothing? (Note that it is no accident that the scene shifts to Canada just as the Mexican border becomes unbearable, and the Canadian one nearly habitable.)

11. Is anyone financing this?
That picture looks like a guy who should be working at a 40 hour a week job in order to support himself, and possibly a family.

Why did these militia abandon the Mexico initiative? Because the ACLU was camping out not far from where they were?

This seems a bunch of wannabees who have been running around in the woods on weekends calling themselves a militia, shooting paint ball guns while they are so out of shape that could not chase or shoot a rabbit if their life depended upon it.

If they have a beef with the borders, then take it to the proper authority who is in charge, and present a well organised, intelligent legal challenge to the security of the border.

They are behaving like mindless, ignorant adolescent vigilanties.

They are playing and pretending to be "tough" It impresses their wives and their girlfriends, I suspect. They are, actually, seeking , indeed, probably hoping, for a serious confrontation and if they continue, it will happen.

I said it in another thread as a joke --what next--the border with Canada? And here we are.

13. Get a map, morans!
Simcox offered no timeline on when the Canadian border patrol to be organized in Idaho, Michigan, North Dakota and Vermont might begin. But he said he hoped to start patrols near San Diego, Calif., by June and along the rest of the Mexico border by October.

Michigan's border with the Great White North consists of: large stretches of Lakes Huron and Superior; three bridges; and a tunnel. Where exactly do these morans expect to stop the flood tide of Canucks yearning for expensive health care, lousy transportation, overbearing militarism, and Neanderthal drug and gay marriage laws? :sarcasm:

17. And I wonder who would pay for this sort of legislation.
Why would you want to make it harder for Canada and the United States to cross borders? Hmmm...Canada isn't full of terrorists, but maybe the USA is.

But then again it falls on its face as an argument.

They are private citizens and not a part of our INS's Border Patrol. In fact the real Border Patrol would rather they wouldn't be there at all.

Odd how they run from the Mexican border once it starts hitting 85 degrees at midnight.

it has only hit 90 a handful of days so far, much less 85 at midnight.

Since most of the migrants are crossing elsewhere these days, there's nothing for them to do....booooring.

19. they are looking for terrorists and so forth on the Canadian border
It's actually not secure and terrorists already have been caught
at the Canadian border...remember the guy with the truck of explosives
who was caught? They were planning on blowing up LA in 2000...
an entire truck full of explosives.

And I agree with Simcox, they shouldn't have to be doing this..
it should be done by the national guard and think what you want
but this sure is bringing attention to the lack of the government
securing the border.

30. Correction
There was only one terrorist ever caught crossing the border. He was in a car, and had nitro in his trunk. He did have ill-intentions, and was apparently involved with some non-al-Qaeda Islamic group in Montreal.

I think the main point is this: he was caught when he tried to cross the border. The same cannot be said for all the 9/11 plotters, none of whom came from Canada, and all of whom entered the US openly, using legal visas.

That is how a couple of the 9-11 hijackers got in. My guess is that Mainers up north will not be too impressed by them. I'd like to see them spend a whole winter up there, I imagine they wouldn't last long.

31. That is false, no hijackers got in via Canada, NONE
They all had legitimate US visas and entered the US from elsewhere, not Canada.

Canadian officials go on offensive against 9/11 myth
Doug Struck, Washington Post

TORONTO -- True or false? Shortly before Sept. 11, 2001, several of the terrorists who would carry out the attacks that day slipped into the United States from Canada.

Canadian officials are vexed that 3½ years later they have not dispelled the groundless claim that Canada was a route for the Sept. 11 hijackers. Frank McKenna, the new Canadian ambassador to the United States, calls it an "urban myth" and has been trying to beat it down in television interviews and letters to the editor.

snip

In the weeks after the attacks, investigators established that all of the hijackers had entered the United States from countries other than Canada, a finding that got the official stamp last summer with the release of the Sept. 11 commission's report. But that has not stopped the story from spreading.

23. Seriously? I am REALLY glad these guys are doing this.
Hear me out, okay? I know we're a progressive bunch on this site, but c'mon people! Wake up! The government refuses to stop Canadians from sneaking over the border, taking our fast food and cleaning jobs, and abusing our health service. It's crazy! They are a great drain on our system, and I hate the way they stand around in groups on street corners, talking Canadian -- I mean Jesus, they can't even learn AMERICAN -- looking at our women. And, all they want to do is bring their families over. Great! That's all we need here, more Canadians interested in passing laws for same sex marriage and legal pot! This HAS to stop! I saw a story on Dateline last night about the formation of Canadian gangs in Detroit -- it's a real problem. The worst one is called The ""Want another beer, eh?"'s. Jesus, all they do is go on rampages, drinking Molson and curling on the Great Lakes. IT'S CRAZY!!!!!!!!!!

The Minutemen are insane. Go volunteer at your local nursing home, morans!

28. As a Canadian, I find this funny
The idea of these John Wayne wannabbes patrolling one of the world's longest borders makes me laugh. If you know anything about the geography, and the climate for much of the yeer, it's quite a comedic idea.

(Incidentally, someone wrote here that "terrorists have already crossed the Canadian border." Actually, there is but one known terrorist ever caught doing so.)
