Just on the TV now. Republican San Diego Mayor Murphy is resigning. Woohoo!!!

Edit to spell out San Diego instead of SD to avoid confusion.

Actually I was kind of hoping that the recall election would go through. Donna Frye might be a bit better off with multiple challengers (that one might get in a recall election) than just one (probably Ron Roberts).

10News.com Effort Under Way To Recall Mayor Murphy Campaign Aimed At Gauging Interest

POSTED: 7:47 am PDT April 19, 2005 UPDATED: 9:38 am PDT April 19, 2005

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego Mayor Dick Murphy has been feeling the heat lately. First, a Time magazine article called him one of the worst mayors in the nation and now there is an effort to have him recalled, 10News reported.

Those behind the early stages of the effort said the timing of Monday's article is coincidental. But they said it's helping bring attention to their goal -- an official campaign to recall the mayor.

9. It legally can't until he's been in for at least 6 months...
Which would have meant the earliest they could start gathering signatures would have been in June and probably a bit later with some of the other stipulations in the municipal code.

5. I've been missing out. Which cookie jar did Murphy get caught
elbow-deep in?
I left San Diego back when then-Mayor Maureen O'Connor offered "a beautiful climate and a skilled workforce" to Hughes by way of inducements when they were deciding whether to relocate Tomahawk production to Arizona or stay in San Diego after winning the contract from General Dynamics.
Needless to say, they didn't bite on the climate thing and left the state along with thousands of jobs.
O'Connor was probably the only one in town who thought they would value weather over cash.

7. From SignOnSanDiego
Mayor Dick Murphy announces his resignation
Mayor Dick Murphy today announces that he will resign as mayor on July 15, 2005.

The announcement came at a 10:15 a.m. press conference. A special election will be set up to replace Murphy.

Why do we need a special election? We already know who the real Mayor is.

8. Interesting...
Edited on Mon Apr-25-05 12:47 PM by calipendence
Earlier it was thought that Murphy wanted to have Donna Frye in the original election, with the thought that she'd take votes away from Ron Roberts. Some went so far as saying that he'd prefer to see her in charge rather than Ron Roberts as a part of the reson for him not fighting her write-in candidacy intially.

I wonder if he still feels that way if he might pull something like having his lawers pulling the plug on defending their positions against the lawsuit that I think is still outstanding that would put Frye into office instead of him (with the issue on whether or not to count the non-bubble checked ballots). That way he could potentially still ensure that Ron Roberts wouldn't get into office. It would also save the city money from having to schedule a special election.

Anyone think there might be a legal shot at that outcome? Then again, perhaps his backers (stadium folks and the ones that sponsored the "powerful mayor" proposition earlier) are pressuring him to go through with the election to keep Donna out too.

10. Whose idea was it to put an enormous jail
smack in the middle of downtown San Diego? I realize this is off-topic, but I was just there on business and I couldn't believe my eyes.

San Diego looks like yet another American city that is being made up as it goes along. A world-class hotel here, a jail there, a cottage industry for bail bondsmen here, a historic district there...Too bad.

11. Just another one. Don't forget the "other" SD mayor
From my file:

Roger Hedgecock a right-wing conservative "Republican Family Values" kinda guy, has been a popular San Diego talk-show host for more than 17 years, but he’s also a former San Diego mayor that was convicted in the 1980's of conspiracy and 12 counts of perjury, over failure to report more than $350,000 in campaign contributions. Forced to resign as mayor in December 1985 after his felony conviction, Hedgecock discovered (hate) radio.

13. San Diego Mayor Resigns!

By SETH HETTENA, Associated Press Writer
Monday, April 25, 2005

(04-25) 10:48 PDT SAN DIEGO, (AP)

San Diego Mayor Dick Murphy resigned Monday in the face of criticism that he failed to lead California's second-biggest city out of a widening federal investigation of City Hall.

"It's clear to me that the city needs a fresh start," Murphy said, announcing he will leave office on July 15. He said he anticipated a special election on Nov. 8 to select his replacement.

Last week, Murphy was called one of the country's three-worst big-city mayors by Time magazine, which said the mayor was "discredited" by the city's pension fund crisis.

San Diego's pension system has a nearly $1.4 billion deficit and is at the heart of investigations by the Securities and Exchange Commission, the U.S. attorney and FBI into city finances, possible public corruption and securities fraud.

21. corruption everywhere
Good Lord - look at what I just read:

"Deputy Mayor Michael Zucchet would serve as acting mayor until the vacancy is filled. But there is potential complication: Zucchet goes on trial May 3 on federal corruption charges."

Let's hope that all of this opens the door to a revolution in San Diego.

And then this:

"Murphy's announcement follows a spate of bad news for San Diego government.

The Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating city finances and allegations of securities fraud.

The U.S. attorney and the FBI are conducting a criminal investigation into possible public corruption.

Wall Street rating firms have barraged the city with bad news for a year, repeatedly downgrading the city's bond rating."

30. Yahoo!
I'm in Murrieta/Temecula, about 1 hour north, inland.

I'm happy; I listen to Donna Frye speak on the local Air America affiliate, 1360 (KLSD - Al Franken made a funny ad for it).

Donna Frye seems to care a great deal about the people of San Diego, and she's very articulate; she deserves to be in the Mayor's chair.

34. Lets hope Frye wins the special election
then lets hope she does a great job of representing the progressive agenda. Then lets hope she does not get caught in any investigations or accusations of wrong doing. This will put a positive spin on the Dem's and a bad one on the way republicans work. It may, but I doubt it, have a little effect on Issa and Cunningham along with the state assembly and senate seats. But it would be nice to have the second largest city in CA run by Dem's.

Are you still living near Big Bear? I remember the meth labs near Sugarloaf fondly (just kidding - I was a social worker from '93 to 2000, and that was my beat - and that activity kept social workers employed, along with a whole lot of cops).

Big Bear was lovely. I could shop in town during lunch.

Why else go through all of the lawsuits to steal the election, and then resign.

He must have cleaned up whatever he needed to clean up to try to keep himself out of prison.
