Lakeport activist touched the world

Friends, colleagues recall Ruzicka's enthusiasm, commitment

By Glenda Anderson
THE PRESS DEMOCRAT

The tributes to Marla Ruzicka came from around the world, expressed by journalists, political figures and activists at a Lakeport church Saturday.

The foreign correspondent for the Times of London traveled from the Far East to describe Ruzicka as an inspiration of kindness in the most terrible of places.

The U.S. senator from California praised Ruzicka as a symbol of courage and caring amid the bloody turmoil of Iraq.

And the Hollywood star came from his Marin County home to lend his voice to a chorus of peace advocates worldwide who remembered the diminutive, 28-year-old Lakeport native as having touched the world in a remarkable way.

3. this has been the most moving story of recent
memory. G-d rest her soul. She was truly a courageous angel of mercy.

We have lost someone of great significance.

4. Why do the Freepers...
And Freeper-types keep screaming about her being a "traitor," and such?

Pretty vague to me, she wanted civilians casualties counted, and that makes her a traitor?

5. ...because they are lunatics.
And hypocrites, too, of course.

6. I know
If you want to feel sick to your stomach, read what the freepers are saying about her. It got me thinking: are there any mirror images on DU? Are there any situations in which DU members would cheer on the death of an American (or any peaceful person?). I can't think of many, and certainly none on which there would be unanimous agreement.

8. A poem for Marla, well-missed...
The Soul of the Seed

The soul of the seed resides in the stone
But the role of the soul of the seed is unknown
The role is quite real but the question is moot...
For the soul of the seed rises up from the root
And it travels the stem and it lives in the leaves
Unraveling up to its flowery eaves
And it radiates color so marvelous bright
And it floats on the scent that it sends through the night
And it drinks up the sun and it waves to the breeze
And it thinks up and hums little songs to the trees...
And the reason it does all these things is the need
That is felt in the heart of the soul of the seed
