The choice of Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger as the new pope on Tuesday, Jewish religious leaders say, is a sign that the warming ties initiated by Pope John Paul II between the Vatican and Jews will continue.

The Roman Catholic Church's leading conservative, the German Ratzinger was elected the new pope in the first conclave of the new millennium by cardinals intent on sticking to conservative policy. Ratzinger is the first Germanic pope in roughly 1,000 years.

"His election is confirmation of the cardinals on the issue of continuity," Rabbi David Rosen told The Jerusalem Post Tuesday. "There's not a single issue in which the new pope will not be in complete accord with his predecessor. After all, his predecessor appointed him to the most important theological post in the Catholic Church.

"This continuity will be reflected in Catholic-Jewish relations. He has a deep commitment to this issue. And his own national background makes him sensitive to the dangers of anti-Semitism and the importance of Jewish-Catholic reconciliation," said Rosen, the international director of interreligious affairs for the American Jewish Committee.

"He was also supportive of the establishment of full relations between the Holy See and Israel, and he cares deeply about the welfare of the State of Israel," added Rosen.

But remember, he's a no good Nazi because some DUers don't like his ideological stances on issues, and he was forced along with all other boys his age to be in the Hitler youth.

1. The new pope is a pedophile protector period...
Allowing innocent children to be harmed is a pattern that only those who harm children protect.

3. no good nazi?
There's a thread not too far back with people talking about how he was required to join the Hitler Youth and wasn't an enthusiastic member and it doesn't matter now--who is saying he's a no good nazi? It seems like the opposite is going on.

4. Really? I don't believe it
Israel maintains a very very liberal point of view when it comes to abortion. You may google to get the information.

Most "pro-lifers" do not realize that they are giving billions to Israel and that Israel has a quite realistic view on abortion that is the opposite of what they think should be done to women in their hate women society.

So there, Ratzinger and so there "pro-lifers" who are Catholic and fundamentalist, and who continue to support Israel giving their tax money year after year, but who voted for Bush because of the propaganda put out by the churches that women who have abortion need to be stopped in their wickedness because their body all belong to them.

5. Not so interested in his youth as his old age
He was the man who defrocked Matthew Fox, who virtually destroyed Liberation Theology, and who has forbidden Catholic priests and nuns to minister to homosexuals. In quotations I've heard today on NPR, he appears to believe there is only one way to Paradise, and it is through Jesus and the Roman Catholic Church.

I can't see this pope as one to build bridges among people, in view of his prior actions.

12. The Jerusalem Post and Rabbi Rosen are rightwing shills
I would wait to hear from the Jewish mainstream. I am certainly concerned about Ratzinger's nazi ties. While John Paul II was clearly a victim of the nazis in occupied Poland, the same cannot be said for Ratzinger.

I am willing to give the new Pope a chance to demonstrate by his deeds that he will continue to follow his predecessor's footsteps in reconciling the Church to the Jewish people.

13. Is he a Nazi?
Edited on Tue Apr-19-05 09:47 PM by Kelvin Mace
Let's see:

Nazis are fascists.

Ratzinger is a member of Opus Dei, an openly fascist organization within the church created by a Francisco Franco supporter.

Nazis required supreme devotion to Germany.

Ratzinger requires supreme devotion to the Church.

Nazis opposed communism and free intellectual inquiry.

Ratzinger is an ardent anti-Communist and as Grand Inquisitor stamped out free intellectual inquiry by calling it "dissent".

Nazis considered Communists, homosexuals, Christians who resisted the government, and defenders of intellectual freedom to be enemies of the state.

Ratzingers considers Communists, homosexuals, Christians who resisted the government, feminists, Muslims, and defenders of intellectual freedom to be enemies of the Church.

Also, The Rat has stated that Jews can only be saved through the Catholic Church. Either they convert, or they burn.

As I stated earlier, The Rat may not have been an official member of the National Socialist Party, but he certainly has bucked for honorary membership.

That newspaper is owned by folks who are blinded by right-wing ideology. Don't trust it. Rat's ties to jews are killing them in the Holocaust.

16. He may or may not have been in the Hitler Youth and German Army willingly,
but picking someone with that background when there were plenty of other good candidates available certainly seems unnecessarily provocative, to Jews, and any other people who fought and suffered from Nazism. This includes Americans and Canadians, of course.

17. As Former Nazi......
He participated in the Nazi Party as a kid. He says he was forced itno it, but considering his Nazi-like behavior/actions as Cardinal, I think he still has the same temperament of his youth.

18. Think about this for a moment.
The claim is, that he had to join the Hitler Youth, then the German Army as both were compulsory. But, he didn't actually shoot at allied aircraft when he was in an anti-aircraft battery. In other words, the claim is that the German government forced him to join the army but conveniently looked the other way when he shirked his duties. It doesn't hold up to me - the German Army was not a lax organization even in 1944 and 1945.
