Bush makes pilgrimage to Lincoln museum
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/afp/uspoliticsbushlincoln

SPRINGFIELD, United States (AFP) - US President George W. Bush helped dedicate a museum devoted to Abraham Lincoln, who led northern forces to victory in the bloody US civil war and abolished black slavery.

The president likened his stated goal of promoting democracy worldwide to Lincoln's own efforts to live up to the US Declaration of Independence's promise that "all men are created equal."

"Do the promises of the Declaration apply beyond the culture that produced it?" Bush, who has a bronze bust of his long-ago predecessor in the Oval Office, said in a speech to thousands of people at the dedication ceremony.

"Americans have no right or calling to impose our own form of government on others, yet American interests and values are both served by standing for liberty in every part of the world," he said.

1. Can somebody please make this idiot disappear? I am just about
at the end of my rope with this fake!! Bush has compared himself to everyone that admired: Kennedy, FDR, Lincoln, and Jesus! Is he suffering from an identity crisis?

2. We really need another Lincoln ...
to lead us through the dark days created by Bush and his robber baron friends.

Lincoln would probably not be surprised that the country is still divided North vs. South. Lincoln would laugh at a preposterous oaf like Bush and cry at the state of our Union.

3. Perhaps he will become inspired to free the "Rovbots" and let them
think and feel like human beings again - instead of what they do now where they encourage the rovbots to act like adolescent brownshirtors and try and diminish the lives of others for fun & profit.

8. By the way, pretty much all of Sprinfield was shut down
trees were uprooted, etc., for this imbecile's visit....

And the museum highlights the Republican penchant for making shit up--in it, John Wilkes Booth doesn't say "Sic Semper Tyrannus"....

12. I'm wondering how the trees will fare
when they are replanted. I can't imagine uprooting trees for the shrub.

14. "uprooting trees for the shrub "
Is this some kind of metaphor for his p)residency, and its effect on our country?

15. They completely changed the meaning
"thus always to tyrants" turns to "vengeance shall be mine"? They rewrite Lincoln's history AT Lincoln's museum ...I doubt it really was because the language was "overly arcane", but rather because they were "concerned" that too many people associate the word TYRANT with dubya... The whole thing is disgusting and depressing.

16. The GOP is the party of revisionist history...
It's funny that folks like Lynne Cheney, who howl that history is being "distorted" because people who aren't white males get mentioned nowadays, haven't got word one to say about this....

18. Is the GOP responsible for the Lincoln Library ?
The more I find out about these idiots, who were given (or took)reponsibility for the Lincoln momorial library in Springfield, the more PO'd I get... Who do these nitwits think they are to REWRITE history?

I found a letter in the Chicago Tribune this morning from someone who is disgusted as we are about this. Here are parts of it:

Skipping the Lincoln sideshow
Philip Cain
Published April 19, 2005

Westmont -- My wife and I have cancelled our plans to make a special trip to Springfield to see the new Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum....When I go to a museum, I expect to see the truth preserved, not the trumped-up carnival sideshow.....Any claim that such a museum is an educational treasure may be exaggerated.

When teachers talk about the skills they strive to create in their pupils, they almost always mention critical thinking skills. How can it be educational, then, to present figures like Chief Justice Roger Taney and Frederick Douglass saying paraphrases of their own words?

....Then there is the silly business of (not including a photograph of) Lincoln's (open) casket. You said that the museum's creators had to "bow to warnings from schoolteachers" that an open casket might offend the children.

.....My favorite goof from your story, however, is the erasure of John Wilkes Booth's first words after he shot Lincoln, "Sic semper tyrannis."

....Julie Cellini, chairwoman of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, explained in the story that, "Everybody said, `Huh?'" when they heard it. "Everybody" didn't include me or anyone with my basic education.

Even so, "huh?" sounds, in spite of its pitiable lack of articulation, like a question. Isn't it the business of museums to answer questions?

10. That whirring noise you hear is Lincoln rolling in his grave
If there was another civil war, would Bush still subject himself to civil elections because he believed that they were the foundation of our democracy? NO! He would suspend them!

If there was another civil war, when it was over, would Bush proclaim "malice towards none and charity towards all"? NO!!

:puke:

13. He says the same thing when he sleepwalks into the Lincoln bedroom
and pisses on the floor. It doesn't make sense then either.
I wish the ghost of Lincoln that is supposed to haunt the WH would take him out to the woodshed.
