Moscow court orders more Yukos assets to be frozen
http://feeds.bignewsnetwork.com/?sid=ffeef98d612e1bff

Big News Network.com Tuesday 19th April, 2005

A Moscow court has frozen the main assets of beleaguered Russian oil company Yukos to keep it from selling such entities to pay tax bills.

The court's action comes in response to a request from Yuganskneftegas, Yukos' former oil production unit, which claims it is owed $5.87 billion by its former parent, Interfax reported Tuesday.

Yuganskneftegas is now part of a state-run oil company.

The Kremlin is pursuing Yukos for $27.5 billion in back taxes and criminally prosecuting its former chairman, Mikhail Khodorkovsky, awaiting the outcome later this month of his fraud and tax evasion trial.

3. Exactly
That's what the media never focus on regarding this.

Oct 3, 2003:
"MOSCOW, Oct 3 (AFP) - Russian oil giant Yukos was rumoured Friday to be considering selling a major stake to US major ExxonMobil in a deal that would bring unprecedented foreign involvement to Russia's booming energy sector."

I'm not defending Putin necessarily, but that is why he's doing this.

2. Looks like the Russian courts do take kindly to the same
type of tax shelters that get a wink-n-nod here in the West.
