Grass Fires Plague North Country; Large Fire On Drum

A "fairly large" fire was burning on Fort Drum Monday, post officials said.

A plume of smoke can be seen from as far away as Gouverneur in St. Lawrence County and Champion Hill in Jefferson County.

Drum officials said the fire is burning at an impact area on post, but because there are undetonated artillery shells in the path of the blaze, officials are letting the fire burn out on its own.

<snip>

That is one hell of a big grass fire. Gouverneur to Champion is about 35 miles. This happens every few years on the impact area and they always just let it burn. Not great environmentally, but a pretty sure bet safety wise. It's not just artillery shells left in the impact area, may be some unexploded aerial bombs as well since you used to see the bombers flying over that area a lot when they were 'practicing'. No need to practice anymore. My mother lives in Gouverneur and they said that they could smell the fire also.

4. There was one in the summer of 02 or 03 that could be smelled
in Canton for days. That's about 50 miles from Fort Drum.

7. The Hoot Owl is still open.
Not sure about Dave's. A lot of the bars in Canton closed when the drinking age went from 18 to 21. I don't remember the year, but it must have been around '76?

Canton College(ATC) grad, Manufacturing Technology, 2003 myself, although non-traditional, I'm 54 now.

Nice to hear from you.
