DeLay mailing says he never broke law
WASHINGTON -- In a fresh counterattack, House Majority Leader Tom DeLay told supporters in a mailing made public Monday that he has "never been found to have violated any law or rule by anyone" despite numerous allegations.

Democrats have made clear that their only agenda is the politics of personal destruction, and the criminalization of politics," the Texan's campaign added in a defiant rebuttal.

"They hate Ronald Reagan conservatives like DeLay and they hate that he is an effective leader who succeeds in passing the Republican agenda."
....
"It should come as no surprise that following the 2004 election-year attacks on the president that the Democrats, their syndicate of third-party organizations ... and the legion of Democrat-friendly press would turn their attention to trying to retake Congress," he wrote.

The accompanying summary said, "Tom DeLay does not stand accused of any violation of any law or rule in any forum and has never been found to have violated any law or rule by anyone."

Edited on Mon Apr-18-05 08:43 PM by Jack Rabbit

Tom DeLay does not stand accused of any violation of any law or rule in any forum and has never been found to have violated any law . . .

True. He hasn't been convicted of any crime. Yet.

. . . or rule by anyone.

DeLay has been admonished by the House ethics committee three times last year. To say he has never been found in violation of the House ethics rules is utter nonsense.

9. Many thoughts
1) I love this "they" the repubs keep blaming for everything. Am I a they?
2) What'd you expect - a confession?
3) The MSM must be making big bucks to keep taking this type of abuse and still keep sucking on their asses.
4) "syndicate of third party organizations"? Jesus what a laugh. But their followers believe.
5) as the price of gas goes up, I think their followers will believe less.
6) "Call up W and tell him to release another Bin Laden tape. It's getting hot in here"

14. Or "never"
It might well be a "very strong" word too.

And while we're at it, a more precise definition of "personal gain" , wouldn't hurt. :)

Transcript of interview with Tom DeLay

Mr. Hurt: Have you ever crossed the line of ethical behavior in terms
of dealing with lobbyists, your use of government authority or with
fundraising?

Mr. DeLay: Ever is a very strong word. Let me start out by saying, you can never find anything that I have done for personal gain. Period.

15. Ooooh. By the time you've broken a law, you're long since a criminal
One can be a scurrilous weasel of the first order and never "break a law". The law is to rein in the flagrant offenders who've long since crossed the line.

Being a part of the covenant of society is something that selfish users like this asshole need to do. He's not a hack or a clueless misfit, he knows full well that he's fucking the world for personal gain. May he be flailed and pilloried in public.

20. WP: DeLay Issues Broad Denial Of Ethics Violations
Tuesday, April 19, 2005; Page A01

House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Tex.), in his first detailed written response after weeks of questions about his dealings with lobbyists and handling of ethics matters, issued a broad denial that he violated any law or House rule in accepting trips abroad, and he implored supporters back home to accept his version of what he called "the real story."

DeLay's overseas travel, his ties to Washington lobbyists and his hard-edged political style that prompted three admonitions from the House ethics committee last year have received intense media scrutiny. One question raised has been whether DeLay's travel was paid for by nonprofit groups or by lobbyists and private interests working through those groups.

In a message e-mailed to supporters in his suburban Houston district that was provided to The Washington Post yesterday, DeLay blamed the reports on Democrats, liberal groups and the "legion of Democrat-friendly press" who were trying to undermine Republican control of Congress. "It is abundantly clear that their fundamental strategy revolves around attacking me and working to tear down Republican leadership," he said.

DeLay said in the message, titled "What the Press Isn't Telling You" and covering about six single-spaced pages, that his overseas trips were "proper" and "properly vetted and undertaken" and that if there were any question about the source of funding for that travel, no member of Congress "should be responsible for deceptive behavior by outside organizations."

He stressed that he has never been found in violation of any law, and that the three admonitions from the ethics committee did not constitute a "sanction."

24. Fugly is as fugly fugs.
I think that needs some explanation:

Upon reading the original post, my initial thoughts collided and produced this post's headline. Most will recognize the syntax from Forrest Gump, but a few may not recognize the diminutive form of “fucked up and ugly.” The variation on “fug” as a verb was basically loose-cannon alliteration that seems compatible with the stale atmosphere of fugly repugs. (And there I go again. A dog is a dog is a…)

25. Texas spin on his mail
It really is a good sign if the right wing rag Dallas Morning News is having nasty articles about him...almost a daily thing now (at least on their website, anyway).

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/news/washington/stories/041905dnnatdelaymemo.250fb666.html

"He can call a pig a horse, but it's still a pig," said Chris Bell, the Houston Democrat who filed a complaint last year that led to two of the admonishments. Mr. Bell lost his bid for a second term in the House last year and is now running for governor. "I'm sure he would like for his comrades to think of him as some sort of victim of the slings and arrows of the Democratic Party ... but really, the Democrats are the least of Tom DeLay's worries right now."

One analyst called it remarkable that after 20 years in Congress, the No. 2 leader in the House would need to shore up support back in a district whose lines he personally approved during the last round of redistricting.

"I don't know about the wisdom of putting out a fairly detailed rebuttal," said Richard Murray, director of the University of Houston Center for Public Policy, adding that the memo reflects the view that "right now to survive, we've got to circle the wagons and rally the troops."

For the most part, House members "are holding solid," said Paul Weyrich, president of the conservative Free Congress Foundation. "Where I think he may have a problem is in his district. And it isn't the trips and stuff like that. It's the wife and daughter being on the payroll. I've heard that from people in the district."

DeLay Camp: Democrats 'Hate Conservatives'

Tuesday, April 19, 2005

WASHINGTON —
House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (search), under an ethical cloud in recent months, has told supporters that he has "never been found to have violated any law or rule by anyone."

In a mailing made public Monday, the Texas Republican's campaign added a defiant rebuttal to the letter, saying, "Democrats have made clear that their only agenda is the politics of personal destruction, and the criminalization of politics.

"They hate conservatives like DeLay and they hate that he is an effective leader who succeeds in passing the Republican agenda."

A spokesman for DeLay said the letter and accompanying multipage rebuttal were sent last week to supporters and donors.
