ST. LOUIS (AP) - A former Bank of America trust officer was sentenced Friday to five years in federal prison on charges that she pilfered more than $1 million from customer accounts, using some of the money to buy a home and car. snip

Clifford's attorney said his client wasn't driven by greed but by a disorder diagnosed by mental health experts as essentially "an addiction to spending" for which she has gotten counseling even before being charged.

"She certainly wasn't using that as a defense," Paul D'Agrosa said after Clifford's sentencing. "It was just one of those disorders - almost like you can't stop using credit cards, can't stop spending money. That was part of what's been going on with her."

D'Agrosa said Clifford was benevolent with some of the ill-gotten money, spending some on her church and donating $5,000 to the Animal Rescue Foundation, among other things.

in fact my neice loaned me a book that was basically a take on the Bridget Jones novels but it was about a young Londoner who was deeply deeply in debt and how she couldn't get out of it...but the book made it seem almost romantic..

When your mental illness picks my pocket, you need to be removed from society. I had a friend who robbed me and then was a hero to other scum because "Oh, he is so generous, he gave me this, he gave me that." When I pointed out that the stolen property was MINE, did they give it back? Any of them? Er, no.

Receiving stolen property is also an offense, hello, Animal Rescue Foundation and the church in question. They should return the stolen money. Want to bet they won't?
