Baltimore mayor and contender to unseat our despicable governor, Mean Bobby Ehrlich, was named one five "Best Big City Mayors in America by Time Magazine. Here's the story from Baltimore's WJZ TV (Ch 13):
NEW YORK (AP) -- Time magazine has named what it calls the "five
best big city mayors" in America, giving the distinction to New
York's Michael Bloomberg, Atlanta's Shirley Franklin, Baltimore's
Martin O'Malley, Chicago's Richard Daley and Denver's John
Hickenlooper.
Detroit's Kwame Kilpatrick, San Diego's Dick Murphy and
Philadelphia's John Street were dubbed the nation's three worst
mayors.
The lists appear in the issue of the magazine that hits
newsstands Monday. Neither list was ranked, and the mayors were
listed in alphabetical order. Gavin Newsom of San Francisco
received an honorable mention; No dishonorable mention was awarded.
The magazine praises O'Malley for urban innovations such as
CitiStat. That's a computerized score sheet intended to make key
city agencies like public works, housing, transportation and police
more accountable.
"We've moved from a traditional, spoils-based system of
patronage politics to a results-based system of performance
politics," O'Malley, 42, told the magazine.
The magazine said it consulted with "urban experts" who chose
from among the 29 mayors who lead cities with populations greater
than 500,000. http://wjz.com/localstories/local_story_107142718.htmlIn a related story about O'Malley's run for governor, we have this from the same source:
BALTIMORE (AP) -- A new poll shows Baltimore Mayor Martin
O'Malley leading Governor Robert Ehrlich in a potential race for
governor.
The poll was conducted by Potomac Incorporated.
It shows O'Malley ahead of Ehrlich 45 percent to 39 percent with
a margin of error of three-point-two percentage points.
The survey of one thousand registered Maryland voters shows a
downward shift in the governor's job approval rating since January.
That's the last time Potomac Incorporated questioned likely voters
on state politics and issues.
The three-month period was dominated by news of an aide to the
governor spreading Internet rumors about O'Malley. http://wjz.com/localstories/local_story_107142846.htmlMarty is a good guy and real up and comer for the national scene in the years to come. He's 42.
