OR Supreme Court Nullifies Gay Marriages
Edited on Thu Apr-14-05 10:49 AM by Terre
Decision just announced on our local channel Fox 12 News.

Approximately 3,000 marriages were performed last year.

I have no link, as yet.

edit: Link to story on Channel 8 KGW:
http://www.kgw.com/news-local/stories/kgw_041305_news_gay_marriage.1d47dc090.html

My heartfelt sympathies to all involved, but we won't ever give up hope. Oregon is normally progressive, so I think at least a civil union with the same rights as "normal marriages" would have a chance.

on edit again from the article above:

"The Democratic governor (Kulongoski) said that he is now working with a bipartisan group of senators on a bill that combines a proposed civil unions law with the anti-discrimination provisions."

1. It was inevitable. Sad, but a necessary step in our fight for equality.
Sigh.

4. What can be done to reverse this for those affected?
At least good "protest season" has arrived, but I hope there is a strong effort to get that back. It's institutionalized discrimination.

11. Well, I'm not one of them.
The supreme court has to base their decision on the law, that's a given and I'm all for it. What I really hate is that "we" passed the so-called "one man one woman" ballot measure last fall and our constitution now discriminates against a specific group of people. Ugly stuff--I have quit going to the church I was attending over that issue. Our governor has just proposed that civil unions be established with all the legal rights and privileges of marriage. A step in the right direction, but I do believe we'd better gear up for another fight with the right. While they're at it, maybe they can get a movement going to outlaw anyone living together outside marriage, then they should go for outlawing adultery (lot of that going around, even among the "Christians" I know) and then there's sex outside marriage of course...let's go for broke, folks. Nothing more important going on in the world! <sarcasm off now>.

the government should get out of the marriage business altogether.

I don't think the government should be promoting marriage in the biblical sense.

As a heterosexual married woman (civil union/an athiest to boot), I would be happier with civil unions for all and leave the option for "marriage" in the realm of churches.

Equal rights for all.
