187,000 GM cardholder IDs compromised (By Undisclosed Retailer)
http://money.cnn.com/2005/04/13/news/fortune500/gm_creditcard/index.htm?cnn=yes

As many as 187,000 GM MasterCard customers may have had their personal information compromised, officials with card issuer HSBC Holdings said Wednesday.

About 6 million HSBC (Research) customers hold GM-branded MasterCards, according to the automaker, and letters have been sent so far to 1,200 telling them their information may have been compromised when they shopped with an undisclosed retailer.

The remaining 185,800 cardholders affected will be notified between now and mid-May, according to HSBC.

HSBC insisted the bank is not to blame for the security breach. "This is not an issue with our card," said Tom Nicholson, a spokesman for HSBC. "It's an issue with the retailer."

4. Well, if it's the retailer's fault, then tell who it is!
I don't have a GM card, but if I did, I'd be on the damn phone demanding to know who this "undisclosed retailer" was! At leat if it is the retailer's fault, I'd know if I used my card there or not.

What's with the non-disclosure anyway?

And what's happening with credit security???? This is the 3rd security problem in just a few months and it's over 100,000 customers each time! Sounds like the odds mean they'll get mine soon!!!!

5. I'm with you on that - tell us the damn retailer
and btw, I already got hit on by debit card last year - I think it got stolen from a web merchant site. Got hit for about $130-4 online web site transactions(porn and music).

Good thing I monitor my card almost daily online. I cancelled the card before the transactions got fully posted - and still it wasn't easy proving to the bank they weren't legit transactions authorized by me!

6. Did you lose any money?
I've heard different stories about debit cards. The banks say they have the same guarantee as a credit card and you'll never lose any $$ for fraud. There are some consumer advocates who say the banks have never shown them any proof of that guarantee. I stick with the credit cards just for that reason. I worked with the credit card companies and I know the guarantees exist with them!

7. Polo/Ralph Lauren is the retailer
I heard it on the radio this morning.

I cancelled my GM Card last night. They wouldn't tell me who the retailer was.
