OMAHA -- Omaha officials are satisfied with the owner's explanation for a rocket launcher found in a car parked outside the main gate of Offut Air Force Base.

Around noon, security personnel at the base reported seeing a suspicious vehicle parked in the lot in front of the gate. Specialists from Lincoln, Neb., were sent pictures of what was in the vehicle and identified the device as a rocket launcher.

The gate was closed for about an hour while security investigated.

The owner of the car showed up Wednesday afternoon and talked to security officials. She said her husband is in the National Guard, and that he had used the device for training last week, then forgot that it was in his car.

1. Well, wasn't that supposed to be returned to the ARMORY????
And we wonder how weapons go missing in this country.

It's not like an RPG launcher is a personal item you buy in the BX.

I say Article 15 the guy for stupidity.

2. The old Steve Martin defense: 'I forgot'
"I forgot that it's illegal to take rocket launchers off base."
"I forgot that it's illegal to carry a rocket launcher in my car."

3. Sheesh. And I try not to leave my cel phone in the car.
So after training with the weapon, he just throws it into the back seat of his personal vehicle and forgets about it?

Let's see; cleaners, gas, pick up kids, and oh yeah, RETURN ROCKET LAUNCHER.

4. If it was a launcher for training it wouldn't of been a threat

There are a couple of types that are used to train for pretty much any rocket / missle system (espicially shoulder fired).

The first is just a dummy launcher, it isn't functional at all. Just lets you go through the motions of using the weapon for practice.

Then there were the ones we would use on the firing range, they were setup to only fire a round (I believe it was something small like a 9mm round, could be wrong and it of been 5.56 but I think it was 9mm).

I'm thinking that either of these is the case in which is why no actions were taken.
