CBS: Italian Journalist: U.S. Lied (On 60 Minutes Wed)
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/04/12/60II/main687555.shtml

Journalist and former hostage Giuliana Sgrena says that the American military is lying about the shooting at a security checkpoint in Iraq that wounded her and killed an Italian intelligence officer.

Days before the Pentagon is expected to release the results of its investigation into what happened at the checkpoint, Sgrena tells Correspondent Scott Pelley that shortly after her release by insurgents, American soldiers in Baghdad opened fire on her car without any warning.

2. Bush would have probably shot the pope too.
If he would have had half a chance.

4. You know the Pentagon will come out with whitewash
They're certainly not going to implicate any of our people. I don't get it. This woman is an eyewitness, and she's a reporter--her job is to pay attention to details. She should certainly know what happened to her. I really hope the Italian people do not let this get swept under the rug.

6. Well, I'm glad she's up and about again.
For a while, I was starting to worry about this situation. Ms. Sgrena originally reported that their car was "showered with bullets". Easily refuted by the US, as they proudly showed off the car with maybe 1 or 2 holes.

Subsequently, Sgrena seemed to back off of her original claims. I thought maybe the US had badgered her.

Of course, she had a 4" inch long American bullet lodged in her lung. That would tend to make anybody subdued.

7. Too bad they only showed the good side of the car
the attack came from the other side and the back.

10. She didn't
The driver, an Italian intelligence agent, was the source of the "hail" of bullets, which may have been a mistranslation - I've also read "burst". Anyway, the shots came from the right side and behind - not from the front - which are the sides of the car we have not seen. The absence of bullets in the front corroborates the Italian story. Little has been refuted other than the Pentagon's blatant lie that they were speeding towards a checkpoint and that the shooters aimed for the engine block.

9. I'm shocked, shocked I tell you....
to hear of this outrage.

To think we would lie about U.S. actions is Iraq.
