Historic parallels as DeLay's woes deepen
http://www.csmonitor.com/2005/0412/p02s01-uspo.html

WASHINGTON – The gap between what House Republicans say on the record about their embattled leader Tom DeLay and what they say in private is wide but narrowing.

In public, most Republicans say that what's driving the criticism of the House majority leader is politics, not ethics. The Democratic "hit machine" is pouring millions into a campaign to oust the most powerful Republican in Congress. But the real target is the Republican majority and its agenda.

But in private, some senior leaders are saying it's only a matter of time before the most powerful Republican in Congress is forced from office. "Democrats should save their money. Why murder someone who is committing suicide?" said a senior GOP lawmaker, on condition of anonymity.

<snip>

While the "gathering storm" has yet to hit local conservative talk radio as it has the national news media, there are also signs that the ethics allegations are beginning to rankle the GOP's conservative base. "Personal ethics are very important to the average evangelical," says the Rev. Richard Cizik, vice president of governmental affairs for the National Association of Evangelicals. "When a person is seen to profit from their political connections, it doesn't speak well for that individual."

And for that very reason I have no problem with the democrats spending money to help expedite his exit from political life.

Which is why they're worried about him in the first place.

3. I continue to find it puzzling that so many have bought into
the notion that the conservative evangelics form the base of the GOP. They are a noisy arm, but they aren't the base of the GOP. This misconception could very well be the GOPs downfall. Misidentify your base and cater to the wrong interests and you'll find your true base sliding out from underneath you.

8. I continue to wonder about that myself.
There seems to be a strong belief that if they cater to the screaming minority the silent majority will still follow. That is not always the case. You would think the polls after the Schiavo ordeal would have driven that point home.

9. What's this "Democratic hit-machine"?????
Do they talk about rove's "HIT MACHINE"!!??

I was reading something on about Dems and the gropennator in San Francisco and they called the Dems.."giddy" at the prospect of ousting arnie!

Do the repubs get called "giddy" by msm?

"While the "gathering storm" has yet to hit local conservative talk radio as it has the national news media, there are also signs that the ethics allegations are beginning to rankle the GOP's conservative base. How long has this taken?

20. Washington Post did
Do the repubs get called "giddy" by msm?

It was slightly before the 2002 elections and they described the repukes as being positively "giddy" over their prospects for a win.

who in the dickens is she gathering content from?
did she talk to anyone further to the left than a "former conservative activist now with the Democratic Leadership Council."??

what is "a senior GOP lawmaker"?

if it's an elected official, should he/she be speaking to the press on 'condition of anonymity'?

A fundie from Utah. This guy was the perfect slick, self-righteous prick with a phony smile and an american flag lapel. I have no idea how, but we're all eating lunch and he brought the topic around to Clinton and morality and how Democrats violate every one of his values and immorality and blah blah blah. I had a bad case of the flu and was just going to let it go, but finally he went too far.

I said, I suppose that lying us into a war that killed this guy's nephew (I pointed at a guy at the table who I didn't even know) plus 1600 more of our kids, and tens of thousands of innocent civilians strikes you as moral? Yeah, cheating on your wife is WORSE than murdering a hundred thousand? You people are a trip. Oh, and how's your lying skank DeLay doing? You call that phoney Christian MORAL?

he was getting red in the face until I brought up Delay. Suddenly he shut up and said, I knew I shouldn't have brought up politics.

Damn, a clean knock-out. Later he came up and shook my hand. I was not too happy about even talking to the fuck, but what the hell, it's business...

I think DeLay is their Achilles heel. They have no way to defend him.
Even Newtie is sticking the knife through the ribs. Remember, Delay is the one who behind the scenes got him booted. Revenge is a dish best served cold.
