Kerry: Trickery Kept Voters From Polls
Edited on Sun Apr-10-05 05:35 PM by Placebo

Many voters in last year's presidential election were denied access to the polls through trickery and intimidation, former Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry told a voters' group Sunday.

"Last year too many people were denied their right to vote, too many who tried to vote were intimidated," the Massachusetts senator said. "There is no magic wand. No one person is going to stand up and suddenly say it's going to change tomorrow. You have to do that."

Kerry supporters charged that voting irregularities in largely Democratic areas made it difficult for voters to cast ballots in the November presidential election. A lawsuit in Ohio cited long lines and a shortage of voting machines in predominantly minority neighborhoods, but the Ohio Supreme Court dismissed the suit.

Kerry also cited examples Sunday of how people were duped into not voting. "Leaflets are handed out saying Democrats vote on Wednesday, Republicans vote on Tuesday. People are told in telephone calls that if you've ever had a parking ticket, you're not allowed to vote," he said.

he's a little too late. By about 6 months?

Here's a tip: Tell them when the problem starts to show itself. Not until the problem gets buried so deep that it's impossible to get out under from it!

67. They waited until there were a few chinks is the armor
...is what they did, and they were SMART to play it that way. Remember Sore Loserman?

Complaints after the fact by national politicians would have been dismissed as sheer grousing. But since the election, we've had one disaster after another -- pointing to something that looks like incompetence coupled with ethical absence on the part of the Chimp admin.

Social security, Delay, the thieving of lockbox accounts, Halliburton overcharges, Gannongate, the Schiavo debacle (massive judgment failure, there), no discernable Pope Funeral bounce, the third Transportation Security Director just resigned...it's starting to look really ugly. So now's the time to pile on with a ten ton election fraud rock, especially if they can back up their assertions. Tipping point!

Kerry Says Citizens Need to Pressure Lawmakers for Voting Reforms
10 April 2005

Speaking today at a Faneuil Hall event sponsored by the Massachusetts League of Women Voters, John Kerry “told a crowd of about 100 in Boston on Sunday that all citizens must demand their right to vote and refuse to be intimidated.”

Kerry, who is using crutches as he recovers from knee surgery, said too many voters who tried to cast ballots in last November's presidential election were rebuffed. He said people must push for changes to make sure all voters are treated equally.

"Last year too many people were denied their right to vote, too many who tried to vote were intimidated," Kerry said. "There is no magic wand. No one person is going to stand up and suddenly say it's going to change tomorrow. You have to do that."

BOSTOBN - Many voters in last year's presidential election were denied access to the polls through trickery and intimidation, former Democratic presidential candidate told a voters' group Sunday.

20. Kerry still doesn't get it . . . . .
It was a hell of a lot more than "trickery" -- it was vote fraud -- vote theft, vote totals manipulation . . . . .

Kerry you laid down and rolled over and let the lying bastards steal yet another election.

Until the democrats start calling the results of the 2004 election what it was -- election fraud -- there will NEVER be another democrat in the white house, nor will the democrats EVER win a majority of the seats in the house and/or senate.

22. He Definately "Gets" It. But One Still Needs Evidence Before Accusing
one's opponent of rigging voting machines.

And that means HARD evidence... not TIA's statistical analysis.

Or maybe you think Kerry had some kind of magic wand that would have transformed the media into HIS advocate back in November.

The Mediawhores and the GOP were DROOLING for Kerry to go down to Ohio and start the process...

43. Can we start here?
This is not the first I heard voters were called and told if you were a Democrat, you vote on Wednesday.

Now I'm assuming the voice that made that call belonged to a human. Humans usually have names. And they have addresses. And if the person receiving that call did a *69, they could probably get origin of that call.

I cannot believe no one did that?? No one knows who made these calls? No laws were broken?? There were no investigations? No subpoena of phone records??

I am not a violent person, but you can be damn sure if anyone ever called my house with the intent to deny me from voting, I would make sure that person would wish he was never born.

49. The *69 feature doesn't work in all cases.
Disruptive callers usually anticipate being traced & they can block *69 attempts.

And in regard to caller i.d., I tried to call a telemarketer back using the number that was displayed & got a "this number is not in service" recording.

31. Nobody was happy with what happened
But for Kerry and other Democrats to come out with six guns blazing could be detrimental to the entire movement. I feel that when someone screams about how they are not crazy is when they look the craziest. What would crying fraud accomplish other than to fortify the idea that we are sore losers to those who already believe that? Mainstream America won't buy that it was fraud yet and the only way for the news to get out is for softball statements like this to make it into mainstream press to plant the seed. Think of the campaign ads in 2006 if repubs vote against legislation that would fix the problems. We could easily point to the cover-up then after the electorate has been conditioned, through these types of soft-ball statements, to accept that there were problems, regardless of whether they believe that the outcome was changed through fraud.

37. Crying fraud in Washington state has the GOP contesting
the governor's race and they have gained a court date in May. They've managed to get the election process in this state to be viewed through a microscope. Many questions have been raised and some people have lost their jobs. Not too bad without having 'hard' evidence.

63. They have PROOF
They have specific incidents of convicts voting which is enough to go to court on. The margin is closer there too. They are not saying there was voting machine fraud or anything they can't prove. That's the difference. They focused on one item they could prove, we ran around ranting about conspiracy theories with not an iota of solid evidence.

57. indeed!
dear john kerry-

you weren't "my pick" in the primaries although i picked you out as the nominee. good job! and i got behind you! the presidential debates clinched it! i was ready for you to be prez, the man in the whitehouse! i even brought my son to see you at a campaign event. he shook your hand.

i promised my son that you would not let us down.

nov. 3: son wakes me up in the a.m. after i've had an hour of fitful "sleep" on the couch watching the TV. "mom?" he asks. all i can do is hold his hand and tell him i am sorry. the early day is spent in tears. until mr. kerry concedes, with that same old tired "let's get united" goddamn shit.

hey john kerry! i broke a promise to my son over you! i sent you email asking you not to concede!

i still think you won. but i care as much about that as you did care about us voters and my son on nov 3, 2004.

there is a song, mr. kerry - "too much, too little, too late, to ever try again..."

If I was in an election and I knew that irregularities like this were happening, I would have been speaking about them from day 1. Also, I would not have conceded until it was clear I would not have won with a proper count of the votes.

But Kerry and the DLC care WAY too much about what the Republicans would think. "I can't speak out or someone will call me sore loserman. Boo hoo."

Fuck the Republicans I say.

What's doubly disgusting is waiting until AFTER both the post election media coverage AND the challenge of the Ohio electors to say ANYTHING, when you KNOW the media will not cover it.

33. Remember the "caging" emails that DU found going to and from
Jeb Bush's office from the Florida GOP? Apparently some of the FL GOPers got their .com and .org confused and sent emails to the wrong address. The erroneous website published the emails, and people on DU downloaded lists and lists of black voters in predominately DEM areas in FL...the emails were entitled "caging." Greg Palast investigated and wrote a story on how these very voters were being followed and intimidated.

I still have my lists.....

You know, these stories were reported on and reported on, people made big to-do's about irregularities, and nothing gets done. It is not easy to get anything done when the pukes have a stranglehold on the state and national election machine.

I don't blame Kerry for conceding when he did...the outcome would have been the same even if he had not conceded. Were the voters in this country ready to take to the streets? Hell, half of them didn't even bother to vote.

Where have you been? He has spoken about this issue several times before. Including right after the election. I suppose you are one of the "conceded to soon people." Yea,I suppose your right ,it would have worked out differently if he hadn't "conceded to soon." Our party would have looked like a joke and John Kerry would have been branded a sore loser and lost all credibility and respect among st a majority of voters. Yea, but what do you care, you wanted to fight the results with no ammo in the gun. Now if you want to talk about worthless, how about challenging the election results with no tangible, verifiable, documented proof that would hold up in a court of law. John Kerry is telling us change will only come if we want it bad enough. We have to make it happen. Being disheartened isn't going to change anything. I am willing to work hard to push for these voting changes, how about you!

But he needs everyone to work with him and others for the cause of securing clean elections.

55. I hate to break it to you, but this isn't about "voting reforms"
This is about Kerry, who still thinks he has a chance in 2008, trying to curry favor with the grassroots after he abandoned them after the election. The time to bring attention to vote fraud and voter disenfranchisement was before and right after the November election, when it might have meant and/or accomplished something. Kerry had his chance to address the problems in Ohio and elsewhere, and instead he chose to quickly concede the election and then promptly disappear to one of his mansions for weeks while his demoralized supporters were left to deal with the problems. Sure, he's speaking out now, but he knows it won't accomplish anything. He's just playing politics, telling people what they want to hear. The election is over, the voters who were disenfranchised will stay disenfranchised, and we all get to experience the joy of living with Dubya for another four years.

71. Actually, not really
I was at this event and it was about kids. In a way, it was pretty funny. The reason for the event was a League of Women Voters get together to congratulate kids on writing winning essays. The topic of the essay contest was "What we learned from the last election." Teresa Heinz Kerry was supposed to speak at this event but had to cancel and sent her husband instead. (Damned decent of her, IMHO.) You know, Kerry is still a US Senator with obligations to the home folks to show up at Americana events like this and tallk to the people. (Lovely event. I adore Faneuil Hall and it's history. I adore flag-waving, kid-centered events that even have a Choir of school kids singing the American Anthem. The crowd was multi-ethnic and multi-racial which makes my little Boston heart race with pride.)

Kerry spoke directly to the kids. There 5 things that needed to be done today in order to get any kind of progresive ideas through this government. The last one was dealing with the deplorable state of Democracy in America. The thrust of the argument was the plain truth that Dems can only do so much, the people have to get active. It is the only way that things will change in the current climate.

Too bad the Senator had to leave. The essays were great. One was about the poor state of Presidential debates and how we have to do better than the structure that was set up last time. One other kid mentioned how it was useless for a Repub to vote in MA or a Dem in Texas. Too bad Kerry had to leave. I think he would have found these essays challenging and funny. (And, in true Boston tradition, kind of in-your-face. I got a big kick out of them.)

53. Kerry is no joke...

win or loose he is not on the podium to claim a title or open the economic carcass, of our middle & lower classes, to a feeding frenzy of his supporter rodents.

He is a genuine public servant that has great principles and lives by them. He is my hero who has served america, & the world, practically from the day he graduated college.

God loves you John & so do we.

54. There was a poll which showed Dems don't want him to run in 08
Edited on Sun Apr-10-05 11:25 PM by SleeplessinSoCal
I'm over John Kerry even though I heartily supported him and think he's genuinely a good man, perfect for the job.

I think he knows he is too and saw the poll numbers which say Dems don't want him to run again. This may be a way to try to win us back.

It shows a naivite which is sweet, but sad.

I'm a democrat and want him to run again! I also know a few republicans who would vote for in 2008. They are beginning to feel like they made a mistake with Bush.

"Most Dean Activists Don't Back Kerry, Gore

Wed Apr 6,11:06 PM ET

By WILL LESTER, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - Two-thirds of Howard Dean's online activists from his 2004 presidential campaign say they don't want Al Gore or John Kerry, the Democratic Party's nominees from 2000 and 2004, to run for president in 2008, a survey found.

Dean, currently chairman of the Democratic National Committee, was still the first choice of the Dean online activists. Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards and New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton got the most other support for a 2008 run, with Kerry and Gore far behind, according to the survey by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press. Dean has said he will not run for president in 2008...."

Something that some of you may have missed in your haste to blame Kerry. This is an event organized by the Mass. League of Women Voters to give a price to kids who has wroten the best essays about the 2004 election, not a political rallye. So I am happy that he went there and talked about these subjects. We need our kids to be educated about them and all kids dont have activit parents who care. If they did, Kerry would be president.

Now,we can continue to whine or we can try to inform people about the subject. If people had been informed, there would have been a lot more people protesting about the election and not a few thousand activists. Except if you count on the media to inform them /end sarcasm.

72. I wish Kerry could have stayed for the essay reading
The essays were great! (And they answer the burning question, "Where do liberals come from?" We grow them from scratch in Boston, then tell them that the Presidential Candidate from the last election who is going to be there when you give these essays, so have at 'em.

Excerpts:

Winner Grade 4-5
"Have you ever wondered about the 2004 election? Well I have. Would you feel scared if we had a careless president? I would because the president might be asleep when terrorists are attacking the U.S.A!"

Winner Grade 4-5
"Instead of the government giving lots of money to endangered species, the government is giving lots of money to the war in Iraq. War is a terrible thing, and I think this is unfair to animals out there suffering."

Winner Grade 6-8
"Debates do concentrate on the candidates' positions but can cause partisan rancor. Often times this comes from a provocative question that results in an over-the-top answer. The answer, without the question, is then played again and again on news broadcasts, defaming the candidate for nothing a normal person wouldn't do."

Winner Grade 6-8
"The candidates criticize each other, and say that they could do things better They never seem to talk about exactly what they would do, only what the other candidate is doing that is wrong. No one really needs to hear this, because they can figure out what is bad for themselves."

And my favorite essay is from a liberal who hasn't yet taken an economics class:

Winner Grade 4-5
"Making learning more exciting is easy for everyone. I'd put in brand spanking new high tech plasma screen computers and lots of them too. I'd also get the newest smallest projectors. Also I'd buy a faster Internet service like only three seconds."

I wish the Senator could have stayed around so he could have heard what the kids of Massachusetts think went wrong last year. It was great!

62. But he is STILL saying that it would NOT have changed the election outcome
Edited on Mon Apr-11-05 01:03 AM by Nothing Without Hope
if these abuses had been prevented.

Setting aside everything else about Kerry, that single fact really burns me. Whatever else he may say, that is a statement that only small changes in numbers would result from even massive election reform. So why bother? His repeated statement that it would not have changed the election outcome actually undermines the national effort to cleanse the democracy of election reform, in my opinion.

I know I'll be assailed by all the people who revere Kerry and value what he is doing, and I'm sorry to disturb them. I'm NOT asking for him to make a firm statement that the election was stolen. What I want to hear from him is that the full extent of the irregularities is unknown. In my opinion, his stating as a fact that election reform would not have changed the results in 2004, does a disservice to the effort.

He only said contesting the election would not change the outcome. And as far as I can see, there still isn't any evidence that the votes are there.

He has never said that the election might have been different if everyone had been able to vote who wanted to vote.

I am only pissed that your karma had to run over my dogma....
Ya think that all them voters were important enough in your universe to taint the so callelection with fraud and warrant a new one, the way civilized nations like Ukraine, Romania got? How important are these voters rights to you - that were trampled massively in 2 NATIONAL ELECTIONS THAT WE KNOW OF?
You were in Senate in 2000 and afterwards - how did you protect voters, democracy?
Spare me the electoral crap, will you? Democracy is dead in this country and you shoveled the last dirt with your concession and repetition of "I lost because..."
Now, STFU!

75. Kerry blew a critical opportunity
He could have used the focus of the last election to make this an issue. When everyone was waiting to see how the votes would turn out and a tiny bit of attention was being paid to the voting complaints and irregularities in Florida, Kerry quickly conceded -- killing any discussion beyond "let's all unite behind the great George Bush."
If Kerry would have refused to concede until these irregularities were at least acknowledged, if we have flooded the airwaves with surrogates who would philosophically discuss the pivotal role a free and fair votes plays in our democracy, he would have FORCED the media to look at this issue and wake up a lot of the American people to the dangers of electronic voting.
Look what the Repukes did in Florida, 2000, with the military vote!! They had Norman Schwartzkopf and Bob Dole all over the tv. They flew veterans down to Florida to stand on the steps of public buildings and rail against the Democrats who were stealing their votes.
They made an issue out of NOTHING.
And Kerry had this crooked election -- and the LAST one -- and he folded.
The very least he could have done was seized the moment to help this an issue, and he didn't even do that.

90. The "VOTE ON WEDNESDAY" claim -
Edited on Tue Apr-12-05 06:19 AM by lynne
- was first published as a piece of satire in the farcical newspaper "The Onion" prior to the election. Headline from The Onion archives -

"Republicans Urge Minorities To Get Out And Vote On Nov. 3" published 27 October 2004

The claim will not be taken seriously should it become known that "The Onion" broke this story.
