Advocates for Abuse Victims Heading to Rome to Protest U.S. Cardinal's Role in Papal Mourning

VATICAN CITY (AP) - Leaders of an advocacy group for victims of clergy sexual abuse said Saturday they were flying to Rome to protest the Vatican's choice of Cardinal Bernard Law to celebrate an important Mass mourning Pope John Paul II.

The Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests said Law's presence was painful to victims and embarrassing to Catholics. Law resigned as archbishop of Boston in December 2002 after unsealed court records revealed he had allowed priests guilty of abusing children to move among parish assignments and had not notified the public.

On Monday, he will lead one of the nine daily Masses for the pope at Rome's St. Mary Major Basilica, the church where John Paul appointed him archpriest. Survivors Network representatives plan to be there to distribute fliers on how Law mishandled abuse cases. snip

Law has apologized for his wrongdoing. A man who answered the phone at the basilica said Law would not comment. A spokeswoman for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops also declined to comment.

1. OK
Liberal Catholics, I recommend you no longer fund the Church. Still go and all but don't give them any money until the new Pope corrects this mess and gets rid of pedophile priests. Let them know this. If they kick you out, go to a UU church (http://www.uua.org/CONG/index.php), explain what happened, and they will make you feel at home. No need to join.

Only through money can this be fixed. Power of the people should be heard and get this mess cleaned up. Now, go forth and keep your money to yourselves!

2. Catholics you must unite around a line in the sand

The line in the sand is not about,

married priests

unamarried priests

homosexual or heterosexual priests

finances

lawsuits

liturgy

the role of women

theology

The line in the sand is the challenge the church hierarchy has now thrown at you. Namely, who is in control of the safety of the children of this church. With a man like Cardinal Law voting for your next Pope, your options are clear---

Either you pay money for irresponsible priests or Bishops or Cardinals to be in control of your kids

Or, you break free of the mind control, become better stewards and put your money to work in areas where you are sure that children have been and are protected and safe

Do your part to prevent this from happening 100 years hence. Don't pay the church and don't pay the republicans who have stood by them!

7. Protests Planned as Controversial Cardinal Takes Vatican Mass
The Scotsman

Protests were planned in the Vatican today when the American cardinal at the centre of a child abuse scandal was celebrating Mass in St Peter’s Basilica

Leaders of the US advocacy group Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests had flown to Rome to protest, saying Cardinal Bernard Law’s presence was painful to clergy sexual abuse victims and embarrassing to Catholics.

Cardinal Law resigned as archbishop of Boston in December 2002 after unsealed court records revealed he had allowed priests guilty of abusing children to move among parish assignments and had not notified the public.

Meanwhile Catholics’ thoughts turned to who might replace their beloved pope as the cardinals, silenced by an unprecedented pledge to not reveal their thinking, met again to plan next week’s conclave to select a new leader.

9. With his Alma Mater sitting smugly in the WH, are you surprised?
Bush 2 is protecting US Catholic heirarchy from child sex abuse charges same as Poppy did before him, and Ronnie Raygun before him.

Nixon started it off, goaded by Kissinger.

This will end in disaster for Bushco.

11. .S. Cardinal Protested at Pope's Mass
U.S. Cardinal Protested at Pope's Mass

By RACHEL ZOLL

AP Religion Writer

VATICAN CITY (AP) - American clergy sex abuse victims brought their campaign for reform Monday to the center of Roman Catholicism, demanding Vatican officials bar Cardinal Bernard Law from celebrating an important Mass mourning Pope John Paul II.

Two leaders of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, who arrived in Rome just hours before the service Monday at St. Peter's Basilica, condemned what they called the Vatican's ``hurtful decision'' to choose Law for the honor.

Law resigned as archbishop of Boston in December 2002, after unsealed court records revealed he had moved predatory clergy among parishes without alerting parents that their children were at risk. More than 550 people have filed abuse claims in Boston in recent years and the archdiocese has paid more than $85 million in settlements.

American cardinals generally have declined to comment on Law's celebrating one of the nine daily Masses for John Paul, a period of mourning called Novemdiales. But some have said the Vatican likely chose him become he leads an important church, not to give him a personal honor. St. Mary Major is one of four basilicas under direct Vatican jurisdiction.
