Bush says his Christian faith reaffirmed at pontiff's service
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/afp/vaticanpopebushplane

ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE (AFP) - President George W. Bush said the funeral service for the late Pope John Paul II helped reaffirm his personal faith, and lauded the pontiff's "strong" legacy.

Of the service Bush stressed that "it helped strengthen my faith. ... Faith: it's a walk, not a moment, not a respite ... Today's ceremony, I bet you, was a reaffirmation for millions."

"This will be one of the highlights of my presidency, to have been at this great ceremony."

Bush also said the experience reinforced his belief that "There is a living God. And no doubt in my mind the Lord Christ was sent by the Almighty. No doubt."

Though surrounded by a crowd after arriving in Rome to pay his respects, Bush said "when I was kneeling there .. much more in touch with his spirit, I really did. I felt very much at peace there, and I felt prayerful."

do, as well as all other repukes - we only want it "for the moment" and to milk it for "maximum political advantage" - works every time, too!"

72. He is into death.
All the death on 9/11 caused 9/11 to previously be the high point of his presidency.

... and all those executions when he was Governor...

He's Satan, I tell you. He's the evil one. He really gets into death. I am surprised he didn't get struck by lightening or spontaniously combust at this funeral. Sprinkle holy water on him and watch him melt.

114. You can't upstage the deceased at a funeral.
Only George Bush would try.

"This will be one of the highlights of my presidency, to have been at this great ceremony."

As the rest of us know, the funeral was not about "my presidency", it was about his funeral.

39. This is a stupid question for this little ol' ma in her forties to ask ..
but is that a real picture?

It made me gag - just like the overlays of the maps of Iraq and Afghanistan in "Hijacking Castastrophe," that show: (1) that our bases in Afghanistan perfectly lie along the strongly-desired pipeline, and (2) that our permanent bases in Iraq lie perfectly along the "Oil Alley."

Sick that we're sending those children over there for this Stuff.

7. I guess we're not learning anything new here, but still
I want to weep for my country when the President thinks that attending a ceremony is a highlight of his presidency. People are poor and dying in the Middle East and here at home, and all he can think about is the personal kick he gets out of attending a state funeral.

Bush also said the experience reinforced his belief that "There is a living God. And no doubt in my mind the Lord Christ was sent by the Almighty. No doubt."

Who cares, you stupid piece of shit? There will be plenty of time to think about meaningless crap in your long, long retirement. You've dug this country into a deep-ass hole, and we'd appreciate it if you at least made the effort to get us out of it, or at least stop digging. Your low-grade blunders into the realm of theology can wait until 2009.

OK, now I'm convinced he would convert if he could run for another term.
He has used up the fundies, now he could attempt to milk the Catholics for donations and votes. For some reason, I think most Catholics think for themselves and would see right through him.
However, one-issue-voters come in all religions.

100. My Catholic mother's maiden name was Garrett
Which is, as you may or may not know, Irish.
Further, I am a Democrat ONLY because of the Catholic teachings regarding social justice, peace, concern for the poor and a hundred other liberal virtues instilled in me at St Andrew's School and RCC.
I do not push my belief onto others here. I believe God loves all his children equally and my role as a Catholic believer is simply to lift up my neighbor wherever and whenever I can. This isn't anything worthy of praise -- it is simply what I am expected to do and a humble gift I can offer to God.
Frankly, I will stand with my church. The Democratic Party I was raised in was represented by LBJ -- whose avatar I keep to the left of my posts. The Dems today are a sorry, flaccid, mewling, panty-wetting lot. I really don't know why I continue to waste the vote I was raised to cast as a good citizen AND a good Catholic on these losers.
If you want to condescend, if you want to drive the Catholic vote out of the Democratic Party, just say so. I'd be perfectly content to vote third party and I'm pretty certain I'm not alone. No sweat to me either way.

Please don't stand there and accuse me of trying to drive Catholics out of the democratic party. The father's side of my family are devout Irish-Catholics and also happen to be ardent Bush-Lovin' conservatives, so you may be able to see where I get my negative impressions. ;-)

19. Hope that everyone catches what he said here (or didn't say)
And no doubt in my mind the Lord Christ was sent by the Almighty. No doubt."

He didn't say Lord Jesus Christ!

Lord means having authority over others.
Christ means the anointed one promised and chosen by God.

So, saying "Christ was sent by the almighty. No doubt." is kinda stupid because, by definition, that's what Christ means! It always has bothered me that * never (to my knowledge) says the name Jesus (if someone can show me otherwise on that I'd appreciate seeing it).

To my thinking, if * isn't referring to the biblical Jesus as "the Christ". Who's he talking about? (I sure hope it's not that Moon guy. Remember that crazy anointing ceremony that happened a while back?)

I always thought Christ was another word for Jesus. Your definition and logic scare me. Now that I think of it your way.

Christ means the anointed one promised and chosen by God.

Is Dubya going to start thinking of himself as a Christ? Are Christians going to be followers of Dubya?

Can you only be a Christian if you follow Dubya?

Then why doesn't he do what Jesus asked him to do? Instead, he lies, he cheats, he steals, he robs the poor, he heaps further burdens on the most vulnerable and doesn't lift a finger to help them, and he clothes it all in the most pious pronouncements.

Jesus had some pretty harsh things to say about people in power who did such things.

30. I have not seen ONE picture of him with his head bowed or his eyes
down in anything that would resemble prayer. I hace seen pictures of him supposedly praying at other times. He screws up his face as if he is in bad need of X-Lax--to him, it is what he thinks prayers should; look like, according to movies he has seen and of course an act before the cameras.

The pictures I have seen show him staring with a half smirk, while others are praying. Better believe it--this is sending the message that he bows to no one, not even the dead Pope.

33. The man is a completely shameless opportunist and panderer.
I wonder if he ever "gets in touch with the spirit" of any of the tens of thousands of people whose deaths he is fully responsible for?

What a disgusting hypocrite, he makes me ill. If he truly believes that "the Lord Christ was sent by the Almighty", then it is obvious from his actions that he must have embraced satan and is doing everything in his power to spread death, chaos, pollution, poverty, ignorance, and evil throughout the world.

I kind of doubt that Jesus would approve of lying about WMD in order to start a war for oil and profit. The Pope even told him that his war was completely unjustifiable in the eyes of God.
:puke:
Check this out: Apparently, Bush lied right in the face of a Vatican envoy:

A senior administration official said Bush told Laghi that war with Iraq would be "a last option" but that "a disarmed Iraq would leave the world safer."

Vatican to Bush: Iraq war would be 'disaster'

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A Vatican envoy who met with President Bush Wednesday said he "clearly and forcefully" conveyed a message from Pope John Paul II that a war against Iraq would be a "disaster."
snip---
"As we begin our Lenten journey this year, we cannot ignore the tense international situation," he said. "There must be, on everyone's part, an aware acceptance of responsibilities and a common effort to avoid another dramatic conflict for mankind. ...

It is nice to see that he is open to change, and the prejudices of some of his supporters won't interfere with his spiritual seeking.

42. AP: "Bush, Clinton Disagree on Pope's Legacy"
(as opposed to AFP)

ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE - President Bush on Friday said that attending the funeral of Pope John Paul II was "one of the highlights of my presidency" and made clear that he disagrees with former President Clinton's assessment that the pontiff leaves a mixed legacy.

"I think John Paul II will have a clear legacy of peace, compassion and a strong legacy of setting a clear moral tone," Bush told reporters on Air Force One as he flew from Rome to the United States just hours after the funeral. He said he wanted to amend his remarks to add the word "excellent."

"It was a strong legacy," the president said. "I wanted to make sure there was a proper adjective to the legacy he left behind, not just the word clear."

Bush, the first U.S. president to attend a papal funeral, led a U.S. delegation to the 2 1/2-hour funeral Mass that included his wife, Laura, his father, former President Bush, former President Clinton and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Clinton, on the flight to Rome earlier this week, had said that John Paul "may have had a mixed legacy," but he called him a man with a great feel for human dignity.

"There will be debates about him. But on balance, he was a man of God, he was a consistent person, he did what he thought was right," Clinton said. "That's about all you can ask of anybody."

the nearly 2000 men and women who have died for his own policies (and that's just the Iraq war)?
Boggles the mind.

Well, the Pope's death (yes, nothing * had a hand in.... right?) now replaces 9/11 as the previous #1 highlight (according to *'s earlier comments).

So.... let's recap. * considers HIS highlights 2 events in which he really had nothing to do, and which did not help the country or citizens of the U.S. for whom he was elected to serve. Nope... * highlights do not involve his service at all.

Duh.

74. If you're referring to the doctrine of transubstantiation,
I'm not sure if other Christian Churches hold to it. However, the Orthodox and the Anglicans (including Episcopalians in the US), and I think other denominations, believe in consubstantiation. This is the doctrine of the "real presence" of Christ in the sacraments. (Transubstantiation holds that the sacraments literally become the body and blood of Christ, even though they still look like unleavened bread and wine.)

Protestants often teach that the bread and wine are not the body and blood of Jesus, but instead are just a memorial to his sacrafice on the cross. ("Do this in memory of me.") Catholics point to early Christian writings (including St. Paul) to argue that to the earliest Christians, it meant more than that.

As an Episcopalian, my own understanding is that Christ is present in the sacrament in the same way he promised his followers that "where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them" (Matthew 18:20).

Many of them had been waiting patiently for more than a day, after having made a long and arduous trip to Rome. (This was mentioned on the front page of Canada's Globe and Mail yesterday.) Most didn't complain, out of respect for His Holiness (no, George, they aren't referring to you!). But having to listen to Bush "pontificating" about religion like this adds insult to injury ...

Bush Calls Pope's Legacy Clear, Strong

By TOM RAUM, Associated Press Writer

"I happen to feel it was a special moment that was part of a special ceremony for a special person," Bush told reporters traveling with him on Air Force One as he flew from Rome to his Texas ranch. "Today's ceremony, I bet you, for millions of people was a reaffirmation for many and a way to make sure doubts don't seep into your soul."

......Over the next couple of days, Bush plans some mountain biking with Mark McKinnon, the top adman from his re-election campaign, sprinkled in with a little fishing, brush-clearing, bluebonnet appreciation and reading Robert K. Massie's 1980 biography "Peter the Great."

Edited on Fri Apr-08-05 06:58 PM by NYC
Bush is probably looking for helpful hints in that biography.

Encyclopedia Brittanica is off limits to non-payers, so I found this:

In an effort to move his people away from Asiatic customs, Peter imposed a tax on beards starting on September 5, 1698; All men except priests and peasants, were required to pay a tax of one hundred rubles a year, and the commoners had to pay one kopek each. This was seen by many as an attack on religion.

122. I get SUCH creepy feelings hearing the "leader" of a supposedly
secular government talk in such strongly religious terms.

What's next?

:scared:

Freedom of religion, freedom from religion, buddy. Did you forget about that? Or ever care in the first place?

123. shrub doesn't know the meaning of the word faith
or respect. The funeral Mass was for the Pope. The Rite of Christian Burial has nothing to do with the presidency of the United States.

129. How Bush's faith was reaffirmed. An explanation.
The pope is dead. Dead people can't criticize Bush and refute his ideology. The pope did both.

Bush's faith in death was reaffirmed. It's his way to salvation in this world, at least for now.
