CNN: DeLay blasts media over report of payments to family
http://www.cnn.com/2005/POLITICS/04/06/delay.reponse/

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- House Majority Leader Tom DeLay defended his family Wednesday, saying newspaper articles about his wife and daughter and about his trip to Russia were "seedy" efforts by the "liberal media" to humiliate him.

The New York Times reported Wednesday that DeLay's wife and daughter have been paid more than $500,000 since 2001 by DeLay's political action and campaign committees, according to a detailed review of disclosure statements filed with the Federal Election Commission and separate fund-raising records in Texas.

<snip>

"My wife and daughter have any right, just like any other American, to be employed and be compensated for their employment," DeLay said. "It's pretty disgusting, particularly when my wife and daughter are singled out and others are not, in similar situations in the Senate and as well as the House.

"But it's just another seedy attempt by the liberal media to embarrass me."

guess the media was not too "librul" when it came time for the 35000 articles about the Pope or all DeLay's smear tactics regarding the justice system and Terri Shiavo (sp?)

94. Unfortunately he is right sort of
the media is after him now. They've been given their talking points from the Republicans. The Republicans not the liberals are taking him down.

Sadly, our side couldn't take him down if we wanted to (and God knows, we want to badly). This stuff only got legs when the Republican leadership said "walk".

Since the negative net effect of the Schiavo bruhaha was was underestimated by Rove et all, DeLay will take the heat. I don't look for criminal prosecution or changes in the ethics rules (why ruin a good thing). I think Tom is be set up to be the sacrifical lamb and I'd bet my own money Rove is behind it. I couldn't prove it but it has that insider, distraction leak feel to it.

That's how the worm finally turned against Nixon. The media got after him, and finally, his own party wound up pushing him off the cliff. THAT'S what it'll take. Just thank heaven for small favors. They could grow into bigger ones.

29. Well, here's something his daughter was doing....
From Eschaton:

United Parcel Service provided a chartered flight between Washington and Las Vegas for between 50 and 60 people--including lobbyists, top aides and political supporters--at DeLay's request, according to a company spokesman. DeLay flew separately on a Federal Express corporate jet. Lobbyists with the National Association of Manufacturers, the D.C. law firm Verner, Liipfert, Bernhard, McPherson and Hand, and the National Association of Convenience Stores were among those present for the weekend.

The weekend included a late-night party Saturday in DeLay's suite at the Rio Hotel and Casino, which featured a living room, bar and hot tub on the balcony. DeLay was not present, aides said; the event was hosted by his daughter, Dani Ferro, the campaign manager for DeLay's reelection campaign. After the party, Ferro told associates that a lobbyist poured champagne on her while she was in the hot tub.
<Sounds like a "family values" orgy to me...>

From Kos:

A Texas energy company being investigated with regards to improper fundraising by those connected with House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-TX) held a baby shower for DeLay's daughter Danielle Ferro in May 2002--and the event was attended by lobbyist Jack Abramoff, who paid for some of the congressman's overseas travel, RAW STORY has found.

The shower, reported in the Washington, D.C. newspaper Roll Call Jun. 10, 2002 (article posted here), was held at the Washington offices of Reliant Energy Inc., a Texas-based power company that has given heavily to DeLay and his political action committees.
<more of that DeLay family values shakedown>

And you can't get much more offensive than this clown.

I'm sure his constituents will understand perfectly that his wife and daughter are entitled to more than a half million dollars of their contributions.

Think about this, though. When he is convicted, he has the go-ahead from his fellow Texan to take a hit out on the judge.

23. In tomorrow's headlines I think it's time for Gordon Smith --
-- or Lincoln Chafee or SOMEBODY in that goddam party to stand on their own two feet and suggest that Congressman DeLay resign owing to the appearance of extensive corruption in and around his office.

Where are these voices? Party loyalty is a good thing when the Senate Whip is shepherding votes on a key nomination. But blind loyalty to anything is not healthy, and GOP office-holders need to think of the broader, American zone instead of their own idiotic loyalties to this scumbag.

Since DeLay is not going to go peacefully, wiser voices must prevail, and it's time they spoke up.

The Republicans have taken out a hit on him. It's the only reason the media is reporting any of this. They were given the go ahead to take him down. Otherwise, this would have gone down the same memory hole that Jeff/James Guckert/Gannon slipped down.

I knew as soon as I started seeing it in the corporate news whorehouses that the Republicans had sanctioned his takedown.

Buh -bye :hi: Tommy! Hope the door doesn't hit you on the ass on the way out. On second thought, you deserve a whuppin'!

104. I felt a litle guilty
for picking on the Texans. Like I have room to talk..I live in Georgia. We're just concluding the worst state legislative session ever. Non-stop attacks on women's reproductive rights along with a myriad of giveaways to big business...at the expense of taxpayers. Plus truly heinous "sunshine" legislation which shields elected officials from scrutiny and protects corporate hanky-panky from investigation. We have real fundamentalist "God is talking directly to me" representatives. It's scary.

110. Amen
I had to testify before a house committee last week to point out that as a school nurse, the law they wanted to pass as was unsafe to diabetic kids (they wanted to allow any yahoo with 2-4 hours of training be able to draw up and administer INSULIN :wow: ).
Needless to say that not only violates the Nurse Practice Act in Texas but nurses are held responsible if said 'diabetic volunteer resource person' screwed up per same Act. Now they could listen for over 2+ hours to the guy introducing the obscene cheer leading moves bill (no shit) but they cut me off, were rude to me, belittled and tried to intimidate me (I waited over 8hrs to present-it was 10pm when I got to speak). I felt like I was on trial for a crime instead of trying to bring expert insight to institute some safety measures for the kids.
Finally, the lady after me (testifying as to the danger also), shut them up by saying that she was DEMANDING her due process (I'll remember THAT next time I face these putzes).
After it was over I had to drive back to Houston and go to work the next day. I was told we managed to get them to send it back to subcommittee----which for this group was about as good a success as one could hope for. The consensus with our union lobbyist was that this was the meanest group they had to deal with....Thanks again Tom.:grr:

69. "But it's just another seedy attempt by the liberal media...
to embarrass me." First off, that doesn't sound like a denial.

Second, what liberal media? Do you mean Newscorp/Fox and AOL-Time Warner/CNN? The WSJ editorial page? The dominance (still) of right-wing hate/talk radio? The myriad newspapers that happily swallowed every fucking bit of pre-Iraq invasion propaganda? Is that what you're talking about Tommy?

82. Pardon Me While I Gloat And Chortle
When even the cowardly, gutless, incompetent excuses we Americans have for a "free press" finally get off their lazy kiesters and start prodding around the many interesting facets of the Representative from Sugarland's many little projects and finds that things are all neat, tidy, and entirely above-board, then it strikes me that the representative from Sugarland is finally in some of the hot water her richly deserves.

I shall enjoy watching DeLay deal with his predicament and hope it leads to multiple indictments.
