Border Group Report Results in Arrests

51 minutes ago U.S. National - AP

By BETH DeFALCO, Associated Press Writer

PHOENIX - Volunteers for an effort to patrol the Mexican border reported their first sighting of suspected illegal immigrants, resulting in 18 arrests, authorities said Sunday.

<snip>

"You observe them, report them and get out of the way," said Mike McGarry, a spokesman for the project, which begins Monday and is to continue for a month.

The volunteers reported another illegal immigrant after he wandered onto the campus of a Bible college near the community of Palominas, where about 100 Minuteman participants were staying.

Minuteman volunteers planned to start regular patrols Monday, fanning out across 23 miles of the San Pedro Valley to watch the border and report any illegal activity to federal agents. It's an exercise some law enforcement authorities and others fear could lead to vigilante violence.

1. Since bush reneged on his campaign promise...
to fund 1,000 more border guards, people are taking things into their own hands. I just read on Yahoo that they are already being credited with the apprehension of 18 illegals.
Not all of them are packing, actually a low percentage if the reports can be believed.
It won't be long until one of these cowboys decides that someone is "threatening" him and decides to take a shot though. I can't see this going too long without someone getting trigger happy.

2. They really should be outside Pulte/Del Webb headquarters....
Not tromping around in the desert.

McGarry, the good republican that he obviously is, would never make that connection of money buying power, but rather scare a group of people trying for a better life.

3. There's been a real surge of RW nut jobs lately
I'm guessing these people somehow feel empowered by gains made by their party.

4. If they really wanted to help...
they'd patrol outside businesses hiring illegals.

If they weren't getting jobs, they wouldn't be coming here.

Oh, yeah, and the businesses might actually have to pay a living wage instead.

5. Your statement is isleading at best, an outright lie at worst.
These are not vigilantes. These guys are simply watching, then reporting illegal border crossings to the proper authorities.

If you consider these guys vigilantes, you must also think the same of your local Neighborhood Watch.
