Activists Push to Get Lynchings Prosecuted (GA)
Edited on Mon Apr-04-05 07:45 AM by Skinner
http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/0405/03mooresford.html

When Ruth Stewart, 77, got to the bridge she gazed down into the woods where the bodies were found along the banks of the Apalachee River.

"I came down here a day or two after they killed them," said Stewart, who is the sister of the only known living witness to the Moore's Ford Bridge lynchings of July 25, 1946.

"Everybody was down here picking up souvenirs. I wasn't there picking up souvenirs. I went to see where there was so much cruelness."

The cruelness is one of Georgia's deepest secrets — the killings of four blacks by a mob of white people in the days of the segregated South when the taking of a black life by a white often was a crime destined to go unsolved.

5. i disagree,i feel EVERYONE who committed crimes in the past
should be tracked down and have their day in court.hopefully with convictions.i feel the same about Nazis who have been living in South America for the last 60 years, track them down and give them a trial.it's far more humane and just than their killing and torture.

6. I appreciate your sentiment
about letting the past go, but there is no statute of limitations on murder. I also think that the truth should be told even if no conviction can be obtained at this date.

3. Why did it take so long for people to become outraged?
Now that the murderers are dead of old age, they'll be prosecuted?
