More Than 10,000 March in London in Day of Protests Against Occupation of Iraq
By Jack Garland Associated Press Writer
Published: Sep 27, 2003

LONDON (AP) - More than 10,000 protesters demanding the pullout of coalition troops from Iraq marched in central London on Saturday, chanting "No More War" and "Bush and Blair have got to go." Thousands more in other countries raised their voices against the occupation of Iraq.

The London protest was the biggest organized by anti-war activists in several countries, including France, South Korea, Greece, Turkey and Cyprus. In Athens, anti-war demonstrators hurled bottles and yoghurt at riot police outside the American embassy Saturday, during a march by some 3,000 activists chanting, "Occupiers out!"

"War in Iraq - Illegal, Immoral and Illogical" read one banner as people of all ages strode out of Hyde Park in central London and through the streets toward Trafalgar Square, banging drums and whistling.

Police estimated the orderly crowd had reached 10,000 and was still growing as more demonstrators joined in the first major national protest in Britain since Iraqi regime fell. (snip/...)

5. So you a gin drinker are you?
I'll be there in Dolores Park...I was there in 1970, still a sophomore in HS protesting the Vietnam war...this war (invasion) in Iraq is getting ugly and the lies from these republican fascist are becoming more furious, repugnant and disgustingly sick. All for oil and billions for corporations and intended to keep Bush is poll numbers high and point fingers at those who disagre as unpatriotic and not supporting the troops...

Well thanks to protestors of all types, in the streets, online, donating time and money, educating others, making phone calls, sending emails, letters and not afraid to speak up loudly...this war is quickly being exposed for what most of us here on DU knew all along.

This SF homeboy will see you there, (I live in Humboldt County now but my parents still live in the city.)

This Evil Empire needs to be combated with protests, shouts, placards, marching masses, you name it. TV cameras need to be rolling and show this to the millions of TV-watchers at home.

The VietNam war was finally ended by protests. The US was pandemonium; protesters were shot at a College campus; it was non-stop chaos. I arrived in this country as an immigrant just as all this was going on. I couldn't believe what I was seeing.

It worked. And there was a powerful machinery at that time, too, to keep things going, but they were finally stopped.

The ONE thing that Bushco cannot handle is criticism. They just melt like ice cream on a sidewalk. That's why the Democrats, who have finally found their voices (at the 11th hour, no less), and have been pounding on them like surf on a rock.

Keep it up.

Dissent is the highest form of patriotism - Americans have the right to question our leaders, even if he or his friends did lie, cheat, and steal (votes).

Thousands stage Iraq demo

Thousands of protesters gathered for an anti-war rally in London calling for an end to the US and UK occupation of Iraq.
The march started in Hyde Park and was followed by a rally in Trafalgar Square addressed by speakers including Tony Benn, filmmaker Ken Loach and Labour MP George Galloway.
The organisers said they wanted to make Labour respond to their anger over the situation in Iraq, ahead of the party's annual conference.
Police estimated there were about 20,000 marching, although organisers estimated up to 100,000 had attended the event.
