Singapore -- Burma's pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who had been held virtually incommunicado by the military since a government-sponsored attack on her opposition party in May, was allowed to go home Friday, but her doctor said the Nobel Peace Prize laureate will be kept under house arrest.
Suu Kyi, 58, had a three-hour gynecological operation at a Rangoon hospital last Friday. Until her surgery, she had been held in an undisclosed location.
"She will continue to rest at home under the supervision of her doctors while the government stands ready to provide and assist her with medical and humanitarian needs," a government spokesman said.
Suu Kyi's doctor, Tin Myo Win, told diplomats and reporters at Asia Royal Cardiac and Medical Center that the military authorities were still controlling access to Suu Kyi, according to the Associated Press. He added that Suu Kyi will be under his care for at least eight weeks.
