50,000 Germans March for Peace
Easter weekend -Friday though Monday- has become a traditional weekend for peace marches in Germany.

"Some 50,000 people took to the streets in Germany over the weekend to take part in the traditional Easter peace marches. Activists protested against war, cutbacks in the social welfare system and the new EU constitution.

The US-led war in Iraq was the center of renewed criticism at Germany's Easter peace marches in 65 cities across the country this year. But participants also emphasized the drawbacks of the new European constitution, which must be approved by German lawmakers on May 12.

"We want social equality and civil protection rather than pre-emptive war, as well as a democratic Europe," said Willi van Ooyen, spokesman for the organizers "Informationsstelle Ostermarsch."

1. Very interesting. I wonder when CON will tell us about this march.
Marches all over America and the world for peace. Gigantic protest marches in Bahrain and Germany against dictators and fascism.

And we get to watch talking heads spout about one brain dead woman in Florida. Yea, we got balance.

3. They won't mention it.

It's interesting to notice the news you do get from here.

"Nazis" (yes, they are here, but I daresay there may be more in Idaho and Arkansas.)
"Unemployment" (Yes, it's high, but because of the EU expansion, east German integration, and global markets. All of which could be called 'spreading democracy the peaceful way.')
"The war, the war, the war" (It's over, it's been over, think of something else to say)
"Health care there is a failure, it's primitive" (No it's not, it's wonderful. But the hospital lobbies aren't as nice.)
"Taxes are too high" (It's more difficult to compare than one might think, but maybe a few percent higher. I don't notice it. It covers many expenses that are privatized in the US, like a free college education)
"Gasoline is outrageous" (yes, but clean and timely mass transit is within 10 minutes, travel distances are short and cars smaller and more efficient.)
"Bureaucracy riddled" (It's also called 'a resonsible government protecting its citizens from mercury poisoning')

I could go on. I'm tempted to collect them and do a study. I think this is starting to look like another post.

6. You can...Deutsche Welle is on the web
I listen to DW in German and I think they have an English web broadcast, too. Also ARD has news and a great Classical music station. Just remember there is a time difference (for us on the west coast, 9 hours).

And of course, there is always the BBC as well.

I look at several German newspapers online. Der Spiegel is fun because they usually have good photos with their articles.

7. I know less than
the basics in German as I only took one year. If you've got a link I know my family would "tune in"

10. DW News is also available
on LinkTV (on Dish Network and DirectTV, if you are stuck with that (better than cable, at least)), and is followed by Mosaic, a compilation of news excerpts from TV in several Muslim nations. Together they provide a glimpse of how things appear outside the US Corporate media. DW News is very German corporate in perspective, but it is at least not totally subservient to US based monopoly capitalism.

11. Other links
You probably won't find DW to be very different, something like BBC or NPR. But still, they sometimes have coverage and perspective that others don't.

Here's the link to the Spiegel Online english side:
http://service.spiegel.de/cache/international/

I also sometimes check the EU Observer
http://www.euobserver.com/

I could be busy 24/7 simply posting international news to the LBN that doesn't get covered in the US.

I'll keep looking for an other english language internet radio stations for the EU and will post when I find them.
