YUCCA MOUNTAIN: Falsification suspicions spur hearings
Edited on Wed Mar-30-05 12:19 AM by NVMojo
Remember, Bush approved Yucca Mtn. against the protests of Nevada based on "sound science." Just like he based invading Iraq over solid evidence of WMD. See the pattern??

WASHINGTON -- Congress is broadening its hearings on Yucca Mountain after disclosures that quality-assurance documents for the proposed nuclear waste repository might have been falsified.

Leaders of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee announced Monday they have scheduled an April 7 hearing on the Nevada nuclear waste site. A House subcommittee led by Rep. Jon Porter, R-Nev., is preparing for an April 5 hearing.

The Senate committee chairman is Pete Domenici, R-N.M., an influential voice on nuclear issues who aides said is open to examining other options for nuclear waste storage while the Yucca Mountain Project is mired in delays.

Domenici spokeswoman Angela Harper said the committee is compiling a witness list and defining the scope of its inquiry.

In the House, Porter has called on the Energy Department to provide copies of an estimated 20 e-mails in which a U.S. Geological Survey hydrologist suggested that some quality-assurance documents related to climate studies and water infiltration to the repository level had been falsified.

The March 16 disclosure has prompted at least three investigations at the Energy Department and the Department of Interior and has provided critics of the nuclear waste program with fresh ammunition to challenge the project.

1. Road Trip
Better go see the area before its completly unsafe. Now is probably the last chance.
If only we could apply our techno widgets in a safer less destructive manner....

2. During the election
my husband and I were with a group that spent most weekends in Las Vegas working to make NV blue (Clark County went blue, but not the rest of the state.)

In general, when we spoke to people who live in NV, they seemed like they really didn't care about Yucca Mountain. THat absolutely blew my mind. How could you not care? We're in Los Angeles, and you better beleive I care about Yucca Mountain. I live near the freeway that heads straight out to NV. All the waste would be carried very near where we live. I don't want all that danger near me.

People are just so unbelievably stupid.

3. You discount the ability of a controlled corporate media to
remain silent in the local market affected, and to distribute the story for print only outside the state.

4. but you are forgetting that by the time you came to Nevada, Bush
had already approved Yucca Mountain against the wishes of the state. And several lawsuits. No one expected to be able to turn his lies of "sound science" around. I suspect Reid is involved in this.

6. Our statement was always that Kerry believed that the science wasn't
completly understood yet, that he would continue looking at it and continue the discussions about Yucca Mountain and that Bush had not bothered listening to what the scientists had told him, but rather listened to his "spiritual science advisor" instead.

The local news (when we were there) didn't say much, except that Yucca Mountain was a big issue to the locals. We always thought that was a pathetic attempt to mention it, but not really bring it up.

One would just think, with something so destructive in their own backyards and directly affecting them, they might, you know, notice it. People generally don't care about things that don't directly affect them, like, say, a war or possibly poor children living below the poverty line... but if something might directly affect them, they sometimes notice!

5. I'm out east coast,
but i feel this is still scary stuff.
We're in a war over this crap right now. We have minimal border security at best.
Will the transports get convoys of security personel or what?
All trucks must stop for fuel at least.
DHS should be screaming about this.
