21 House Democrats angry over ABC news sponsorship deal with Wal-Mart
WASHINGTON (AP) — An ABC morning news segment called "Only in America" should be sponsored by anyone but Wal-Mart, according to 21 Democrats in Congress who complained Tuesday about the company's relationship with it.
Rep. Anthony Weiner, D-N.Y., said Wal-Mart Stores Inc.'s sponsorship of the segment on "Good Morning America" is an effort to make a false impression on viewers that it supports American workers and products.

"To try to allow Wal-Mart to continue to wrap itself in the American flag when it has been a company that has been hostile to so many American values is troubling," said Weiner, who is running for mayor of New York City this year. "More and more Americans are asking about the price that we have to pay when Wal-Mart comes into a community, treats workers poorly, violates immigration laws and squashes small businesses."

In their letter, lawmakers from 10 states, including four from Ohio, urged ABC News to cancel immediately Wal-Mart's sponsorship of the "Only in America" series, which profiles Americans.
(this sounds like standing up or something,is that wise, really?)

13. Me To
I once got thru the doors of a Walmart in some kind of devil trance but then I snapped out of it and left without having any money siphoned off. To solve the other problem, we unplugged on around '90 to keep our brains from being siphoned off.

6. Wal-Mart's China inventory to hit US$18b this year
http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/english/doc/2004-11/29/content_395728.htm

The world's largest retailer, Wal-Mart Stores Inc, says its inventory of stock produced in China is expected to hit US$18 billion this year, keeping the annual growth rate of over 20 per cent consistent over two years.

The trend is expected to continue, company officials revealed.

"We expect our procurement stock from China to continue to grow at a similar rate in line with Wal-Mart's growth worldwide, if not faster," said Lee Scott, the president and CEO (chief executive officer) of Wal-Mart.

An unnamed company official also stated the firm will extend its procurement base from South China's Pearl River Delta to the North and East China in the coming few years.

A market rumour says the retailer has its eyes on a 340,000-square metre warehouse at a logistics garden of the Shanghai Waigaoqiao Bonded Area.

<snip>

Insiders point out Wal-Mart's imports from China have largely influenced the US trade deficit in China, which is expected to reach US$150 billion this year.

11. tax those walmart shoppers; they're helping to grow the welfare state
maybe this walmart tax should be higher and applied on every walmart store in every state:

Montana May Levy Tax on Wal-Mart

MISSOULA, Montana -- Montana's state legislature is targeting the big-box megastores that have taken the place of the old Western general store, weighing a special tax to offset welfare costs for low-paid employees of the retailers, Reuters reported.

A bill up for debate Tuesday calls for taxing retailers like Wal-Mart, Target and Costco for each store with more than $20 million in sales. The measure would impose a 1 percent tax on stores with more than $20 million in sales. It would rise to 1.5 percent for more than $30 million and 2 percent for sales of more than $40 million.

State Sen. Ken Toole, D-Helena, the bill's sponsor, says Montana residents are tired of subsidizing big-box stores whose low prices -- and high profits -- depend on paying workers low wages.

The tax would apply to 160 stores, accounting for about half the state's total retail activity, and funnel about $20 million a year to state coffers, Toole said.

14. now that is excellent! let's hope it passes.
--for once, finally, getting MallWart to pay its own way instead of receiving welfare in the form of infrastructural improvements paid for by tax dollars and public assistance being necessary for employees.

15. Great idea! Glad some pols have finally realized how expensive
Wal-Mart is for taxpayers. But why was Costco mentioned? I thought they pay their employees decently, and treat them fairly, etc.

20. Made in America
Yep, IIRC at one time that was a big part of their advertising. Everything they sold was made in America. That changed after Sam Walton passed away.

19. Our entire news media is being run by large multi-national corporations
We all worship "corporate power" NOT independence. Remember when we were proud to say that Americans were ruggedly independent? No more because the Corporate News Media tells us how to think and feel. :P
