Water and crude oil leak on the North Slope (very big Alaska spill )
As many as 80 workers were hustling Monday to clean up oily water in what ranks as one of the largest industrial spills ever seen in the North Slope oil fields.

The spill came from a buried pipeline at a gravel production pad on the western side of the Kuparuk oil field. Kuparuk is the Slope's biggest oil field after Prudhoe Bay.

Dawn Patience, a spokeswoman for Conoco Phillips Alaska Inc., which runs Kuparuk, said the spill is estimated at 111,300 gallons of "produced water" covering about two acres. Produced water is water that's been separated from the mixture of crude oil and liquid natural gas that comes out of producing oil wells.

<snip>

But much of the water is seawater, and the salt can kill tundra plant life just as crude oil can, said Leslie Pearson, spill prevention and emergency response manager for the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation.

As of Monday afternoon, Conoco reported that about 10 percent of the spilled liquid had been recovered, although some of that might be melted snow taken from the spill site.

. . .

The DEC, which has people on the scene, is estimating the spill cleanup could take three weeks, she said

1. That's why we need drilling in ANWR...............
it balances the spills out a little better. Then those pesky critters will be surrounded and will surrender to the wonder that is CRUDE OIL!
Hell, the oil was there before them dumb animals, they're encroaching on OUR OIL! :sarcasm:

4. There is an Indian tribe living on ANWR land
of course none of the ANWR articles mention the fact that these tribal indians who live off the land will lose their way of live when the porcupine caraboo are driven away.

3. ANWAR the last naturally pristine area
of the USoA will suffer from these "spills"

Tell me what's gone wrong. I tilt my head there, under the faucet, but when I turn it on -- dry as paper. Call the neighbors. Who's to blame for what's going on? In the dark without a clue I'm just the same as you.
O, they tell us there's poison in the well, that someone's been a bit untidy and there's been a small spill. Not a lot, no, just a drop. But there you are mistaken, you know you are. I wonder just how long they knew our well was poisoned but they let us just drink on.
O, they tell us there's poison in the well, that someone's been a bit untidy and there's been a small spill. All that it amounts to is a tear in a salted sea. Someone's been a bit untidy, they'll have it cleaned up in a week. But the week is over and now it's grown into years since I was told that I should be calm, there's nothing to fear here. But I drank that water for years, my wife and my children.
Tell me, where to now, if your fight for a bearable life can be fought and lost in you backyard? O, don't tell us there's poison in the well, that someone's been a bit untidy, that there's been a small spill. All that it amounts to is a tear in a salted sea. Someone's been a bit untidy, they'll have it cleaned up in a week.

8. The ANWR oil exploration will be a bigger quake threat
A 50 ton (I believe) truck goes up there and vibrates the ground to get a seismic reading. Wonder how many cariboo will stick around with all the vibrations going on for the two year period.
