Congressman Jackson has stomach surgery to lose weight
<CHICAGO Congressman Jesse Jackson Junior is looking mighty fit these days, and stomach-reduction surgery is apparently at least partly responsible for his extreme makeover.
Just last week, Jackson credited a diet-and-exercise program for his newly trim physique. But in a letter to the Chicago Sun-Times yesterday, the Chicago Democrat says he also had a weight-loss procedure called a "duo-denal switch."

The surgery involves removing part of the stomach and reconfiguring the intestine to help a patient lose weight.

It's normally reserved for the morbidly obese. But at five-feet-nine-inches tall and 257 pounds, Jackson apparently met that criteria.

A spokesman for the 40-year-old congressman wouldn't discuss the surgery but says Jackson is working out and trying to eat healthy. Jackson wasn't available for comment.>

1. That's a risky operation, I know I work in a hospital
and people have died. Usually it is a last resort thing. Being 5'9 at 257 pounds is pretty pudgy but the people we usually see are much bigger and traditional diets have not worked or they have a medical problem which causes them not to be able to lose weight.

3. Those operations are very successful - 3-4% of patients lose
100% of their weight.

6. and a big side effect
is all of the loose skin from losing weight so fast. that, in itself, is bad, but i suppose suffering from weight-induced illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, etc. are worse...

8. Isn't it about 3-5 persons per 1,000 for a
mortality rate? Not good, but probably better than the associated diseases that come with obesity.

I know a good Baptist southern boy that needs to lose at least 100 pounds, and he has gout now also. I'm surprised his healthy wife hasn't put him on a diet, but she probably doesn't believe it's her place to do that. He could die and leave her with 7 kids to take care of.

13. Gastric bypass gone bad....
Yep..know what you mean. We were getting so many of them at one point we started saying "You won't see THESE cases on The Today Show or Oprah anytime soo". Docs were handing these surgeries out like candy to people who we didn't think had any business getting it done. Were they overweight for their height? Yeah. But several were a tad over 200 pounds, not 300-400 pounds w/ weight related health problems.

10. I wish my congressman would
Phil English, that is.

I almost donated money to his campaign with the requirement that it be spent buying a hard hat that fit for his nifty "I'm one of the people. I think we need more jobs in Pennsylvania" commercials!

11. I'm 6'4" and 290. Am I missing the boat here somehow?
Am I missing out on a magical thing that'll make me thin enough to ride a carbon bike?

I didn't know I was a candidate for surgery, I thought I just need to lose about 90 pounds...

20. it might depend on how much of that is fat or muscle
and you are tall also which probably accounts for a lot of the weight.

21. It's mostly fat.
I weighed 210 back in the late 70's, the days of "You're pretty good, what's your name again?"

I don't care what they say, it's STILL the BEST exercise.

Bike riding comes close, though...

12. Bah, humbug--there are better ways, and safer....
My Congressman, too. And he rarely listens to me about ANYTHING, so it's a good thing I agree with HIM MOST of the time. (He is NOT his father!)

Replace the corn, soy, canola, safflower and other vegetable oils (in EVERYTHING) which SLOW the thyroid and cause obesity and depression in the masses, and replace it with ORGANIC COCONUT OIL, which HEALS the thyroid AND the digestive tract, and causes safe, eventual, but permanent weightloss. Add a source of fish oil (canned sardines, capsules, cod liver oil) and a cold careful use of virgin olive oil--be careful though, all that is green is NOT nutritious (ie, they cheat.)

3-4 T/day is the therapeutic dose. I have lost 30 pounds since October, no surgery, no cravings, only delicious, healthy food (good quality protein--ie, free range chicken, eggs, grass fed beef--and organic fruits and vegetables. No craving for sugar at all. In fact, bad food makes me feel sick.

Add green tea extract and your metabolism will be even happier, and it is an antioxidant, fighting cancer and artery disease. Kelp provides the minerals your thryoid needs, if you are deficient, and believe me, your temperature will rise a whole degree! Imagine how much exercise that is! (I do believe in walking, dancing, whatever is fun--I once swam 500 miles within 5 years and STILL could not lose the weight I wanted.)

Happiness also helps. Ignore Bush on Sundays, and go to church instead (a good one.)

16. Why do you say "cold" olive oil?
Edited on Tue Mar-29-05 06:57 PM by NYC
What's the difference if you cook with it? I'm curious.

You said: ...a cold careful use of virgin olive oil...

18. The first virgin press of real olives is the one with all the nutrients...
They are selling us a lot of "olive oil" that is collected by machine and pressed together with twigs and leaves. Then they "color" it to make us think it is healthy, AND put it in plastic bottles to boot (plastic dissolves oil, so you get plastic chemicals in your oil, too.)

Best to buy organic virgin olive oil in dark bottles, then use as the Italians do, cold on tomatoes, olives, cheese, bread, like the vitamin nutrient it is. Being monounsaturated, it is not as dangerous cooking it at high temperatures as with polyunsaturates, but still, I don't want all the dark freckles my Italian relatives have. The spots of lipofuscin occur on your glands, too, inside the body, and indicate oxidation.

Saturated fats have all their electrons filled in and are much safer to cook with, as well being safe from rancidity. Think of the days when they used bacon to cook potatoes, lard for pie crust, butter for baking. When we raised our cattle on grass, these were filled with omega-3 fatty acids. Now they have more omega-6's, from the corn.

The coconut oil has in it the medium chain fatty acids that were once plentiful in butter. In fact, they used to treat sick people with the "Butter Diet!" The short and medium saturated fatty acids are anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal--and provide quick energy that can bypass the lack of enzymes in most of us, and also heal the hormones and cell structures throughout the body.

22. Okay, you mean cold pressed olive oil.
I thought you meant it had to be eaten cold. (I cook with it a lot.) I always buy cold pressed extra virgin olive oil.

Thanks for the information. :hi:

23. :-)
Let me know how things go--you'll notice that good nutrition, ie, giving your body what it needs, really cuts your appetite. We also use coconut milk, like poured over cheesy potatoes or baked chicken (garlic/onions) with a little tumeric (prevents dementia.) Also heat coconut milk thinned with a little water for late night drink, adding a little vanilla or cocoa (I use xylitol for a health building sweetener, though fruit is sweet enough for me these days.)

Also, rub a little coconut oil on your neck before bedtime for a warming rush. There is expeller pressed, a little cheaper than the virgin organic coconut oil, available for skin use on the Internet. It heals even stretch marks and wrinkles. :-)

I feel like God handed me a miracle, truly. Hope the same happens for you.
