1,800 Sex Offenders Missing (Florida)
Posted on Tue, Mar. 29, 2005
HERALD WATCHDOG | CRIME

1,800 sex offenders missing

The kidnapping and murder of 9-year-old Jessica Lunsford has raised new concerns over how to track the more than 30,000 registered sex offenders and predators living in Florida.

BY JASON GROTTO AND LUISA YANEZ
jgrotto@herald.com

One month before a registered sexual offender allegedly kidnapped, raped and murdered 9-year-old Jessica Lunsford, Florida law enforcement agencies had lost track of at least 1,800 other sexual offenders statewide, according to a review of Florida's Sexual Offender/Predator Registry.

John Evander Couey, the man who would confess to killing Jessica, was not even listed as one of them because no one knew he wasn't living at his reported address and was staying near the Lunsfords.

The fact that Couey wasn't marked as missing raises questions not only about how aggressively the state tracks offenders known to be on the lam, but how many others have absconded and aren't noticed at all.

If I lived near Pinellas Park instead of in the far NW corner of the US, I would print up flyers with these facts and hand them out to the Terri Schiavo protestors and ask them if they would demand action from Jeb Bush and the Florida legislature to protect LIVING children.

1. They lose kids in the foster care system,
and lose sex offenders.

They just cut off health care to about 100,000 children.

I hope the next Democrat who runs for governor is taking notes on all this.

2. One has been found...
in the middle of the Operation Rescue circus outside Terri Schiavo's hospice:

Scroll about halfway down http://www.operationsaveamerica.org/

Joshua Heldreth (10), learning to stand for Jesus.
Scott Heldreth cried when he saw his son arrested. Ordinarily those would be tears of sorrow for a father watching his son being handcuffed. But Scott's tears were tears of joy because Joshua, in attempting to bring water to Terri Schiavo, had taken to heart the mandate in Matthew 25:35-36. “I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in.“

More on the kid and his dad:

Then check out the sexual offenders registry:

4. I don't you've gone out on a limb. I think you pretty
much have gotten the same impression of Florida that I have. Those bush bros sure know how to run states into the ground, huh? I love living in the Northwest, how about you? ;-)

8. Nobody can top the Green River Killer. And then there's Ted Bundy.
Sorry to be snarky, but the smug self-congratulation around here gets annoying sometimes.

Red Lake Reservation. Red Wing is more than 500 miles away.

20. Wisconsin is more famous for cannibals, not serial killers
But as long as you stick to well-traveled highways, you'll probably never run into one. Except during Oktoberfest...

any of them. Good tip though, stay away from strangers in cars who want to take you to the deep woods.

Barbara did. And considering what has come of it and the cataclysmic damage that has resulted, I have often thought that her love tunnel should be declared a public menace ;-)

11. We caught 'em all. Yup.
Edited on Tue Mar-29-05 04:42 AM by Barad Simith
Ted Bundy, that Green River guy, Rafael Resendez Ramirez, Westley Allan Dodd, the fat fuck who filled up on junk food while on death row until he won the right not to be hanged because the resulting decapitation would have been cruel and unusual punishment, Lee Boyd Malvo...

We got 'em all. It's perfectly save to move to the Pacific Northwest now. Come on up!

12. Actually, the Florida cops caught Bundy.
If the police in Washington had done their job he would never have paid his famous visit to the Chi-O house.

But I do appreciate the invitation! I have a cousin in Seattle--he's a psychiatrist. (No, he's not Frazier.) Perhaps I will pay him a visit sometime.

24. I lived there for 11 months
And moved, because so many people (specifically politicians, etc.) were CRAZY. This from someone who lived in NC for two decades, and now lives in VA. You're spot on, I think.

Because of the legal peculiarities of the Disney territories, they may in fact thrive there.

Guess that's what you get when the place is run by Banana Republicans.

More and more, Florida sounds like a swell place to be *from*.

31. I have questions about this case
Why were the other people living in the house, Dittrich and Secord, given $500 bail? They're accessories, and they lied to the police.

I find it strange that there haven't been pictures of those two published anywhere either.
