Riot police blocked off parts of central Cairo yesterday to prevent Muslim Brotherhood demonstrators from staging a protest in front of parliament to demand political reforms. It came hours after some 50 members of the illegal group were arrested in police raids in five Egyptian provinces.
Brotherhood sources said six members including one of the movement's officials, Abdul Moneim Abul Fotouh, were arrested on their way to the protest. The Brotherhood, considered the largest opposition force in Egypt, says it called the protest to press for political freedoms. It also wants to ensure that the government does not impose conditions that would make it difficult for credible candidates to challenge President Hosni Mubarak in September's presidential elections.
